We recently connected with Christine Lozano and have shared our conversation below.
Christine, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
During a particularly hard time in my life recently I received a card from a good friend that showed an illustration of my favourite story called Alice in Wonderland that said, “Would you like an adventure now, or would you like to have your tea first?” It’s those little things that help. You take in a deep breathe and you go..”Okay I got this.”
When there are blocks in the way, life, money, family, you always have YOU. If you don’t put faith in you then no one else will. I find when I lose myself, I use my artistry to pull me out of it. Photography, writing. I use to get really bummed out that no one was knocking on my door or offering me jobs etc. So I did the only thing I knew what I could and that was making my own path. Continue to do my art and knew that if I put love and experience in it then someone would see it, read it and it would create it’s own magic. That’s how I stay creative, I just keep looking around me with eyes open and write what I know or feel and photograph what I see. It’s as simple as that. You can’t be an artist expecting to please everyone. I do it because it pleases me and I really believe the rest will pave it’s own way.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hello my name is Christine Lozano. I am a self taught Photographer, (old school using film) and an award winning screenplay writer. I’ll talk about my photography which I am really proud of my journey. I started out learning to use my first Film camera when I worked at the Viper Room on Sunset from 1995-2004. I became the In-house photographer there and just walked around and took photos of everything, behind the scenes, shows etc. Trust me when I went to the lab there was a seventy/thirty chance it was going to be blank. Hahaha. Sad I know. But I kept a notebook and wrote down everything from the shutter speed, type of film etc and eventually I started to get some great shots. So much in fact that I had my first gallery show in Hollywood last year and we are taking that show to Texas which we are premiering it on August 2nd of this year and going till the 18th. The next goal is to take it to New York, Mexico City and then Europe.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Whatever it is you do, Tenacity is key. Never give up. I know more often than not we have to get a 9-5 job to keep up the Adulting but always make time for what truly makes you happy. That’s what will always separate us from the robots. The next thing is Self Assurance. You must have an appreciation of one’s own abilities or qualities. Confidence is key. And finally and as equally as important as the first two is Gratitude. I promise you, if you practice Gratitude at some point during your day not only will it raise your spirits but it will also get you to believe you are on your path.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
Alice in Wonderland, there’s a quote that sums up being an artist and not part of the herd,
Mad Hatter: Am I going mad? Alice: Yes, you’re mad, bonkers, off the top of your head…but… I’ll tell you a secret. All the best people are.
