Meet Christine Pfister

We recently connected with Christine Pfister and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Christine, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic is deeply influenced by the core values instilled in me during my upbringing, shaped by the guidance of my parents and within the broader context of my family. Coming from a lineage that spans four generations of individuals devoted to working the land, I have absorbed the significance of diligence, respect, commitment, and a central focus on the care and well-being of others These principles have fueled my commitment to approaching work with dedication, integrity, respect, and a profound sense of responsibility toward others.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I was born in Switzerland, a picturesque country renowned for its stunning landscapes and precision. My hometown is an ancient medieval town with a rich history spanning over five centuries. Despite the idyllic life before me, destiny had a different narrative for me, leading me to the United States.

Upon arriving in the U.S., I embarked on a months-long journey exploring the diverse landscapes and cultures that define this vast nation. Whether by plane or car, I traversed numerous states, hopping from San Francisco to New Orleans, and New York to Miami, until destiny guided me to establish roots in Philadelphia.

The trajectory of my life in Philadelphia shifted when my husband opened Pentimenti Gallery. As he delved into a new business venture, the responsibility fell upon me to carry the torch. Over the years, I have found immense joy in this role, fostering my connection with artists, curators, collectors, and art enthusiasts.

Now, after many years in Philadelphia, I can confidently declare that I am experiencing a wonderful phase of my life. It has transformed from a place of residence to a true home, a canvas where I paint my memories with the colors of meaningful relationships and fulfilling experiences.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Running an art gallery is a unique venture that necessitates a harmonious blend of a genuine passion for art, business acumen, and adaptability. The synergy between these three realms forms the foundation for a successful gallery.

I would advise anyone entering the field that unwavering passion drives sustained effort and eventual success. When you’re truly passionate about what you do, challenges become stepping stones, setbacks become growth opportunities, and the journey becomes as rewarding as the destination.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The challenge I’m facing is the lack of a clear-cut finish line in my work. Unlike professions with well-defined endpoints, my work demands a continuous commitment to improvement and excellence. Time, being a finite resource, adds a layer of complexity to this pursuit. There is perpetual room for improvement, a desire to invest more time that I don’t necessarily have, and a constant drive to elevate my work to new levels of excellence.
