Meet CHRISTOPHER CHAFFINS

We recently connected with CHRISTOPHER CHAFFINS and have shared our conversation below.

CHRISTOPHER, we sincerely appreciate you joining us today and agreeing to talk about some very personal topics. So, to kick things off, let’s talk about a tough one – divorce. Can you talk to us about how you overcame divorce?

I overcame my divorce by channeling a negative environment into positive energy at work. This work turned into an obsession to create and develop the first standardized medical laser core content curriculum in North America and possibly the World. Going through divorce, a lot of people use negative means to deal with emotional trauma such as drugs, alcohol and etc. I chose to do the opposite, using most of my time and energy writing curriculum and even sleeping at our school/clinic some nights. At the time (2013), our school was on the Ohio Medical Board. So, to be honest, after working for about 3 months on the curriculum, and submitting it to the Board for review, I really didn’t care if it passed or not. It was a coping mechanism to keep my mind off the divorce so I would not relapse back into the World of alcoholism (recovering alcoholic who got sober in 2007). To my surprise, it passed the Ohio Medical Board, and the intellectual copyrights were granted in 2015 (copyright # TXu 1-958-769) by the Washington D.C. copyright office. The school already had 3 approved electrolysis programs. I continued to work and added three more laser programs to our school (2 laser hair removal programs and 1 laser tattoo removal program) and got those approved through the Kentucky Commission for Proprietary Education Board and eventually the VA, The Ohio Medical Board, The North Carolina Electrolysis Examiner’s Board, The Tennessee Electrolysis Board, The Kansas Cosmetology Board and the Kentucky Education and Workforce Cabinet Board. Previously all electrolysis programs were approved by these boards. During this time, I wanted to go back to school and be a doctor of medical hair and tattoo removal since I enjoyed these areas so much. Surprisingly, after researching schools in this Country as well as abroad, I could find no such program. Previously I had received two master’s Degrees (one in science & technology the other in education), using these credentials I wrote a medical PhD. program in our post-secondary learning institution and complete a 3-year fellowship under Dr. Gary Palmer at Advanced Laser in Cincinnati, Ohio. At the time he wanted me to have some type of medical degree, so I went back to school and earned a medical assistant degree (completed in 2017) while doing the fellowship. My mother started the school in 1989, fast forward to 2017 we agreed that I should have part ownership of the school, so I assumed 40%. Our school is ranked among the top 20 learning institutions in the United States who produces employment for students after graduating. Our school is designed to teach others how to start and run their own med spa with respect to laser/electrolysis procedures. Since then, we have been featured in magazines, been on multiple TV shows and have partnered with international companies such as Dectro and others so our school can have a more international presence. It is our mission to continually improve and offer students best practices in the fields of both laser and electrolysis!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

What’s exciting to me is that I teach doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, estheticians and cosmetic therapists how to perform laser and electrolysis procedures as well as how to run their own practice (school LIC # KY-R-0040). I have also taught younger individuals just starting in the med spa industry without any of these previous qualifications, only a high school diploma who are first starting to work in a practice before owning their own. I enjoy inspiring others to be independent and have their own businesses. Having your own business is not easy, and it’s not for everyone, however if a student follows the principles we teach in class, he or she can well be on their way to financial freedom and the freedom to set their own hours. The med spa industry is not a “get rich over the night” situation, it takes consistent but slow and steady steps to grow and be financially successful. At the school, we have a total of 3 electrolysis and laser programs, where I teach all six programs along with our staff. We are a family-owned business so the staff consists of my Mother, Aunt and sister, additionally we also own a Med Spa which allows students get hands-on real-World experience on actual patients. We have started incorporating online learning for qualified states although we are a hands-on school but I have published 3 online courses. We are currently working on experimental ways lasers/ipl’s can be used for therapeutic benefits and to fix ailments. For example, I allowed one group of laser students to do IPL on my active shingles. To my surprise, after the treatment, the shingles started to dry up, and the pain was not so intense. I believe that was the first time in U.S. history a person had IPL performed on active shingles. We are currently experimenting with methods/ways hair can be removed medically through a combination of various treatments we teach in class. However, what I am most known for is developing the first standardized medical laser core content curriculum with sub domain categories. This core content curriculum was first approved by the Ohio Medical Board in 2013 and then by the United States Copyright Office in 2015 (# TXu 1-958-769). Even though our technological world is being transformed through the use of A.I., an actual person must still perform these procedures at the current time and be taught best practices. And lastly, a little off topic, but I am the individual who invented “kravinol” to fight the opioid crisis. We currently have this company as a 501 c 3 so we can accept donations to do a proper study using our medical supplement. Intellectual copyrights were granted on October 19th, 2021 (#TX 9-030-792). It is one of our visions to continually help others in need and constantly improve our companies by adapting to technological changing times to accomplish the goal or task at hand while giving back to society.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. Take a negative situation and try to find the positives, or ways to turn it around to yield something good and wonderful in your favor.
2. Never listen to others who say, “that is impossible”, “you can’t do that, “that will never work,” use it as a driving force to prove them wrong and that you are capable of accomplishing something that may seem very difficult to others.
3. Be persistent, in the horse racing business we have a saying, “slow and steady wins the race”, and in the words of Dr. Zargari (my technology professor when I was completing my first master’s degree) “Never Give Up”!

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I am currently looking for other partners to collaborate with in an effort to expand our school. Not only do we teach students in the United States, but we also teach students from different Countries. It would be helpful to partner with more domestic and international companies whose desire is to ensure their staff is professionally trained in best practice procedures for laser tattoo removal, laser hair removal and electrolysis. I have also began to get various training courses on how to work on these devices as well. I am always open to working with laser, IPL and epilator companies to gain more knowledge in how to repair the devices. I most recently published a you tube show of me putting in two thermo electro-static coolant chips when our cutera excel laser broke down ( https://youtu.be/x-FxcfuyXb4?si=ud69U13uHJ-uYrX9). Installing the chips fixed the laser. Anyone can feel free to reach out to me using any of the sources below.
