We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christopher Higgins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Christopher , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is a natural progression in an artists life, and should be embraced at all costs. The moment one finds themselves feeling comfortable, they should thrust themselves out of it. Pain often precedes pleasure, for better or worse. My recommendation is to embrace the discomfort and find meaning in it. Use this then, to fuel your work.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My focus in life is to lose focus. That is to say, delve into all areas of life and find fascination with each avenue. While filmmaking is my main passion in life, I grew very keen on baking around 2020, a passion that persists to this very day. In 2023, after becoming more cognizant of the interest many of my friends had in trying my items, and my genuine love for making them, I decided to open Vance Bakeries.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
From an early age I took a vow with myself to not feel much embarrassment. Whether I fall, trip, laugh wrong, get emotional, or whatever else, I try to find the humor in life’s spills. I find that this very quality, one I’ve consciously developed, is the single driving force of all my personal strengths. In a way, I refuse to respond with something resembling “3 life hacks” for this or that, as there isn’t one single quality that creates an artist. Human qualities, good or bad, all have merit, but it’s about melding these traits within oneself and with others that drive my own personal, hedonistic pursuits.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
I am currently working on my final, undergraduate short film entitled: “Somnambulist”. I have been working in this concept for almost half a decade now, and begin filming in two weeks. The film will be released on the internet publically around December of 2024 on my YouTube channel. Furthermore, I hope to submit the film to several indie festivals across the country. While those pursuits are far away, this film will almost certainly be shown at University of Memphis’ Spring, 2025 Focus Fest.
