Hi Christopher, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?

I grew up as the son of two educators, one of whom was also a successful high school basketball coach. My upbringing was steeped in influences that fostered a growth mindset, making the contrast between a growth-oriented approach and a fixed mindset both evident and impactful. Over time, I’ve come to see self-discipline not only as a cornerstone of achievement but also as a vital ingredient for cultivating purpose and lasting happiness.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I own a hybrid physical therapy and strength and conditioning practice that focuses on promoting longevity through movement and training. Our approach bridges the gap between rehabilitation and performance, ensuring that clients not only recover from injuries but also build resilience and strength for the long term.

What makes our practice unique is our emphasis on Longevity-Based Training, which is designed to enhance mobility, strength, and overall physical function while reducing the risk of injury and burnout. We take a personalized, sustainable approach to fitness and wellness, helping clients of all ages and fitness levels achieve their goals in a way that supports their long-term health and vitality.

In addition to offering hands-on therapy and coaching, we’re constantly expanding our resources and services. This includes new programs and workshops aimed at educating clients on how to move better, recover smarter, and live longer, more fulfilling lives. Our mission is to empower people to stay active and healthy for as many years as possible, and we’re excited to continue innovating in this space.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, I believe the three most impactful qualities and skills on my journey have been adaptability, a commitment to lifelong learning, and the ability to connect with people on a deeper level. These have not only shaped my professional growth but have also allowed me to provide greater value to those I work with.
1. Adaptability
The ability to pivot and evolve has been essential, especially in a field like physical therapy and strength and conditioning, where research, techniques, and client needs are constantly changing. Embracing change and staying open to new ideas have allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.
Advice: Be comfortable with discomfort. Seek opportunities that challenge your current knowledge or skills, and don’t fear stepping outside your comfort zone—it’s where the most growth happens.
2. Commitment to Lifelong Learning
Staying curious and continuously seeking knowledge has been key to staying relevant and effective in my practice. Whether it’s diving into new research, attending workshops, or learning from peers, the pursuit of education has been a game-changer.
Advice: Invest in yourself by prioritizing education and mentorship. Read widely, attend industry events, and learn from experts in your field. The more knowledge you accumulate, the better equipped you’ll be to navigate challenges.
3. Ability to Build Meaningful Connections
Whether working with clients, colleagues, or mentors, the ability to listen, empathize, and communicate effectively has been invaluable. Building trust and understanding fosters stronger relationships and better outcomes.
Advice: Focus on communication skills. Practice active listening, ask meaningful questions, and show genuine interest in others. Building authentic relationships will create opportunities and deepen the impact of your work.

For those just starting out, focus on developing these skills one step at a time. Growth is a process, and staying patient, persistent, and open to learning will set you on a path to success.

One book that has played a significant role in my personal and professional development is Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind by Shunryu Suzuki. Its timeless wisdom has profoundly influenced how I approach challenges, learning, and even daily interactions.

One of the most impactful concepts from the book is the idea of maintaining a “beginner’s mind.” Suzuki emphasizes that in the beginner’s mind, there are infinite possibilities, but in the expert’s mind, there are few. This mindset has helped me stay curious and open to new perspectives, even in areas where I have considerable experience. It’s a reminder that there’s always more to learn, and approaching situations with humility and curiosity often leads to unexpected insights and growth.

Another powerful takeaway is the emphasis on being present. The book repeatedly reminds readers to focus on what’s happening in the moment, rather than getting lost in the past or future. This lesson has been invaluable in my work, helping me to give my full attention to clients, tasks, or even moments of reflection. Presence has a way of deepening both understanding and connection.

Lastly, Suzuki’s teachings about non-attachment have been transformative. He suggests that we shouldn’t cling too tightly to outcomes or specific ideas but instead focus on the process. This mindset has helped me navigate setbacks with resilience and grace, seeing them as part of the journey rather than as failures.

Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind is a book I return to often, as its lessons seem to evolve with me. It’s a constant reminder to stay open, present, and grounded—qualities that are essential in both personal and professional growth.
