Meet Christy Melgoza

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Christy Melgoza. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Christy, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
Where do you get your work ethic from?

My work ethic has its roots in my upbringing, particularly stemming from my involvement in organized sports as a child. With hardworking parents, I learned the value of dedication and perseverance from an early age. As an adolescent, I eagerly signed myself up for cheerleading, softball, basketball, and track. In high school, I continued to push myself, participating in cheerleading and the band field show as a rifle.

This upbringing instilled in me a willingness to go above and beyond the typical 9-5 working hours. It laid the foundation for my career as a ballroom dancer, teacher, competitor, and eventual business owner.

Dancing became my passion, blurring the lines between work and enjoyment. I dedicated countless hours to practice, always striving to be the best I could be. Over time, this dedication paid off, propelling me to achieve more.

However, the most significant factor in cultivating my strong work ethic is finding something I truly love to do. As my mom used to say, “If you enjoy what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” While this may not be entirely accurate, there is undeniable truth to it. Passion for your work fuels determination and makes the journey fulfilling, even during the toughest moments.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Almost a year ago, my lifelong friend and I launched our podcast, “Girl! Can You Talk?”, aiming to empower women by addressing taboo topics and offering support. My personal journey played a significant role in shaping our mission. Nearly seven years ago, despite typically receiving a clean bill of health, at the age of 43, my body suddenly shut down, leaving me feeling anxious and overwhelmed. Confiding in my best friend, Ana, I sought medical help, only to face dismissal. Consulting an integrative MD revealed severe hormonal imbalances due to pre-menopause, igniting a passion to educate women about their bodies.

Through “Girl! Can You Talk?”, Ana and I candidly discuss issues that modern midlife women face. We tackle taboo topics that your mama may not have known she should talk about. While progress has been made since our mothers’ time, there’s still a long way to go in destigmatizing these conversations.

We understand the impact of sharing stories and offering support. Despite the difficulty of being vulnerable, openly sharing my experiences with pre-menopause, parenthood, and loss has been fulfilling. If I can assist even one more woman in finding the answers she seeks, it will be worthwhile. Seeing the resonance with other women, we acknowledge the powerful effect of conversation in breaking down barriers and building connections. Each episode celebrates the strength of women globally. Join us in spreading the message of empowerment and support, creating a world where every woman feels seen and valued. You can find us on any podcast platform.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
No matter where you are in your journey, there are inevitably things you don’t know. When I ventured into the new field of podcasting, I was initially overwhelmed by my lack of knowledge. However, I found that embracing discomfort and excitement for learning new things were one key qualities that propelled me forward.

As someone who prefers control, I discovered that tackling one task at a time and conducting thorough research helped prevent feelings of overwhelm. Additionally, I learned that I didn’t have to know everything; connecting with experienced individuals in the industry proved invaluable.

Boldness and fearlessness in reaching out, asking questions, and seeking help were crucial in my progress. But perhaps most importantly, maintaining a strong desire and determination to push through challenges, uncertainties, and less enjoyable tasks was essential for growth.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal listener isn’t just a client, but rather a woman craving deeper connections and engaging content with like-minded individuals. Our podcast delves into real-life “woman” topics once considered taboo—hormonal changes, wellness, relationships, empty nest, and more! While our primary audience ranges from 30 to 60 and beyond, we believe in the importance of being proactive and prepared for life’s unexpected challenges.

We don’t just tackle serious topics; we also infuse humor into our discussions, celebrating the funny aspects of womanhood. Ana and I speak on these topics and bring on expert guests to provide additional insights and perspectives. In a world where social media often portrays an unrealistic image of perfection, Ana and I strive to be authentic voices representing the imperfect yet genuine experiences of modern midlife women.

If you’re seeking a safe space to openly discuss life’s realities without judgment or shame, our podcast is for you. Whether you’re a woman or even a man, we invite you to join our mission of inspiration and connection. We’re open to collaboration opportunities, whether it’s being guests on other shows, speaking at women’s events, or networking engagements—all in the spirit of empowering and connecting individuals. If you’re interested in collaborating or connecting, feel free to email me at chat@girlcanyoutalk.com We’d love to hear from you!
