We recently connected with Cierra Thomas and have shared our conversation below.
Cierra , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
As a high school teacher of six years, my journey toward developing confidence and self-esteem has been shaped by various factors and experiences. Building Relationships with Students has played a significant role in boosting my confidence. The positive interactions, feedback, and connections with students have reinforced my belief in my abilities and the impact I can have on others. Professional Recognition has also helped my confidence by attaining the title of former Teacher of the Year has been a validating experience that has bolstered my self-esteem. Being recognized for my dedication and contributions to education by peers and administrators has instilled a sense of pride and confidence in my teaching abilities.
Overall, my journey toward developing confidence and self-esteem as a high school teacher has been a multifaceted process that continues to evolve. By embracing challenges, seeking growth opportunities, and nurturing positive relationships, I have been able to cultivate a strong sense of self-assurance in my role as an educator.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a high school teacher on the journey to make it to summer break with my mental health intact, my students are at the heart of everything I do. Their energy, enthusiasm, and growth serve as a constant source of inspiration and passion for me. What excites me the most is the profound impact I have on their lives, not just within the walls of the classroom but as they navigate through life beyond graduation.
The most rewarding aspect of my work is witnessing the transformation and growth of my students, knowing that I have played a role in shaping their future. The connections I form with each student, the moments of understanding and growth, and the shared experiences create a bond that extends far beyond the academic setting.
While I may just be a high school teacher, I see myself as a guide, a mentor, and a source of support for my students as they embark on their journeys. The joy of seeing them succeed, overcome challenges, and pursue their dreams fuels my dedication to teaching and drives me to continuously strive for excellence in my profession. As I navigate through the school year, I am constantly seeking new ways to engage and inspire my students, to create a dynamic learning environment that fosters growth and development. My commitment to their well-being and academic success is unwavering, and I am dedicated to providing them with the tools and support they need to thrive.
In terms of new developments, I am always looking for innovative ways to enhance my teaching practice and support my students’ learning. I am excited about the upcoming initiatives and projects that will further enrich the educational experience for my students and create lasting impacts on their lives.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Empathy, adaptability, and continuous learning have been pivotal in my journey as a high school teacher. Understanding students’ unique perspectives, adapting to changing circumstances, and pursuing ongoing growth is key. Early-career educators should prioritize developing these qualities for effective teaching. Embrace empathy, be flexible, and commit to lifelong learning to enhance your impact and stay inspired in the field of education. Cultivating these traits will not only benefit your students but also contribute to your personal and professional development.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The book “The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader” by John C. Maxwell has been instrumental in my personal and professional development as a high school teacher. A few valuable and impactful nuggets of wisdom from this book include Integrity, the importance of honesty, transparency, and moral principles in leadership. Upholding integrity builds trust and credibility with others. Courage is the willingness to take risks, face challenges, and make tough decisions as a leader. Courage is essential for stepping out of comfort zones and driving positive change and Vision, having a clear vision, setting goals, and inspiring others to work towards a shared purpose. Visionary leadership motivates and guides individuals toward a common objective. These qualities highlighted in the book have guided my approach to leadership in the classroom and have inspired me to cultivate essential traits for effective teaching and mentorship. “The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader” has provided invaluable insights and practical advice that have shaped my leadership style and mindset as an educator.
