We were lucky to catch up with Cindy and Mikey Campobasso recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cindy and Mikey, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
We’ve learned that the energy you put out, is the energy that comes back to you in life. While it’s incredibly important to feel your feelings and allow yourself to live in a range of human emotions, it’s just as important to recognize and remember that all feelings, moods and situations in life are fleeting and not permanent. They’re like ocean tides, they don’t last. It’s just as important to capture and ride the wave of joy and feel it fully as it is to remember the wave of sadness will soon dissolve and shift.
A 1950s experiment out of John Hopkins by a scientist, Curt Richter, showed the deep correlation and psychology behind having hope and ability to be resilient and persevere.
The background: “Dr. Richter placed rats into buckets of water and timed their ability to swim. Rats, who are apparently known for their strong swimming skills, lasted an average of 15 minutes before drowning. In a second experiment, Richter rescued the rats when he saw them begin to stop swimming and sink. When he took them out, he dried them off and gave them a short period of rest (I like to picture him doing this with a mini, yet plush, rat-size towel). And then, just as they were dry and rested, Richter put them back into the water. However, this time Richter identified a substantial behavioral change. The rescued rats swam longer than 15 minutes. In fact, they swam for nearly 60 hours.” –The Power of Hope by Casey Wolfington
Some days, we all feel like the rats treading water. We remind ourselves, as long as we have faith and hope, we can keep going.
The Henry Ford quote we think of almost daily, “Whether you believe you can or you can’t, you’re right.”
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My husband, Mikey and I began our own design/build real estate construction and development company when we lived in Boston to supplement development projects of a the family-owned real estate portfolio I was managing. When we decided to move to Nashville, we changed the name to BosTN Builders to show our roots and pay homage our new home.
We focus primarily on the design aspects of new builds in commercial and residential and love the millwork of custom carpentry. We have our real estate license and really enjoy helping clients find land to then help design their home with them. We also help clients find or list existing homes and businesses find spaces then help them create and build their new space for their brick and mortar store.
We have our GC license too. No project is too small, we truly love helping clients feel happy and comfortable in their homes. Oftentimes, we take on the small repairs and custom built-ins to give clients that completeness in having their home fixed and feel like new.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1) Golden rule, treat all how you want to be treated. Kindness is never wasted. 2) Stay humble and resilient.
3) Keep moving, whatever that looks like — take steps every day to do something to propel yourself forward.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
