We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cj Washington a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cj , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by constantly challenging myself whether it’s to write about a specific topic, try to use guitar chords I don’t typically use, or work with different people to see what we come up with.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a singer-songwriter and guitarist. I perform on a regular basis in the greater Sacramento area. I think what it is most exciting about what I bring is the variety of music that I play, anything from country to Rnb. I have a residency every Friday at an epic venue called The Pink Martini in the Roseville/Rocklin area.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think the three most impactful qualities I have attained through my journey is one my willingness to get out of my comfort zone. Two, my ability to not take myself too seriously on stage as music is subjective. Three, my ability to walk in any room and talk to anyone. For those in the early stages of joint the live music scene I would say don’t stress over the little things as much. For example, if the audience doesn’t clap doesn’t mean they aren’t listening. It doesn’t mean they don’t appreciate the ambience you are providing.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking for new artists to collab with whether we play a few show together or create magic in the studio. If you are reading this and are interested in a collaboration please hit me on my instagram @cjwashingtonmuzic or email me at my website cjwashingtonmusic.com
