Meet Claire Zou

We were lucky to catch up with Claire Zou recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Claire with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic is definitely influenced by my upbringing in China. Both of my parents are very dedicated to their careers, almost to the point of being “workaholics.” My dad, being a surgeon, is even more dedicated, knowing that his work can truly change people’s lives. They’ve taught me not only the value of hard work and taking my occupation seriously but also the importance of being resourceful in overcoming work challenges and making things work.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m an advertising creative, art director, illustrator, and designer based in New York City. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with major global brands such as Google Pixel, Dell, Lego Land, UNICEF, Arcade Beauty, and Johnson & Johnson. My work is multidisciplinary, spanning from crafting brand identities, social media campaigns, and 360 campaigns to creating digital illustrations, package designs, and developing characters in product launches.

Working in advertising allows me to push the boundaries of my creativity. I thrive on finding innovative solutions, whether it’s effectively telling a brand’s story to connect with their audience on a deeper level or creating a comedy show that delivers feminism message. My work has been recognized with Communication Arts, The One Show, Cannes Lions, and Creative Quarterly. My illustration work “Love Letters to NYC” will be showcased on LinkNYC billboards across New York City in August.

In addition to my creative work, I’ve embarked on an entrepreneurial venture doing product design with YY Project. We specialize in creating stunning 3D-printed tennis racket hangers using biodegradable materials. I’m excited to showcase our products at Hana House in Brooklyn, New York, on May 10th and 11th.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I highly value the self-awareness I’ve cultivated over the years. Understanding my capabilities, desires, and what excites me enables me to pursue tasks that fuel my passion and bring me satisfaction. It also helps me work more effectively, avoiding burnout and maintaining my interest. My advice for enhancing self-awareness is to be honest with yourself and appreciate the qualities you already possess.

Meanwhile, I believe I benefit from the ability to keep learning and growing. I believe that constant change and growth are essential and sustainable, instead of hoping for changes overnight. This mindset allows me to approach challenges with less intimidation and more action.

I also deeply value my knowledge of visual art. Despite many years since school, I continue to doodle and illustrate. This skill not only allows me to express my thoughts and meditate but also keeps me informed about new visual trends. It helps me stay attentive to beauty and inspires me to learn and incorporate new ideas into my work.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
In the past 12 months, I’ve noticed a significant increase in my patience. I’ve become more patient in waiting for results from my efforts and in my personal growth journey. I’ve also learned to be patient in not rushing to respond during challenging times or before encountering barriers. Instead, I take a moment to slow down, take a deep breath, and think. I allow myself the time to fully digest before reacting, giving myself the space to come up with thoughtful solutions. I’ve also learned not to jump to quick conclusions or feel frustrated if things don’t go as planned, but rather to let my efforts simmer and trust that great results will eventually come.
