We recently connected with Clara Capano and have shared our conversation below.
Clara, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
I was not always positive and optimistic. In fact I spent a great deal of my life living on the other side. What helped me change was connecting with my purpose. When I gained the clarity on why I was here, how I could serve others and shift my focus to the ability to deliver value each day, everything changed. I now wake up with excitement and energy because I truly believe I can positively contribute to the world, one little interaction at a time. I being and end my days with gratitude to remind me of all the good thing I have in my world. And on the bad days I reflect, not just on the gratitudes, also on learning from the setbacks.
Living this way has not only changed my daily outlook, I am healthier, I am more present and engaged and also more productive. I LOVE life.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
At the end of the day, happier and fulfilled people just perform better, in every aspect of life. As a speaker and trainer, this is what I focus on – how can I help companies, regardless of size, create a healthier environment that fosters a culture where people can grow, communicate and feel a part of something bigger than just themselves. It is important to focus on building the bottom line, and it is also important to know that the BEST way to do this is to build our people. When we can create a heathy organization, not only will we see better results internally, we will also help our people achieve greater levels of happiness and fulfillment outside of the office.
I have the BEST job because everyday is a new opportunity to help people live and work better. Who wouldn’t; want a job like this?
I also truly believe that what I do is critical in today’s world. Too many of us are running too fast, we are disconnected, and burned out. I loved this way too, AND I have learned it does not have to be this way. I do what I do because I do not want anyone else to go through the turmoil, guild, overwhelm and loss that I had because they do not have to.
My talks, books, workshops focus around how to improve our skills with leadership, productivity and mindset so we can learn how to achieve our goals without overwhelm and burnout.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The qualities that really supported me in my journey are listening, learning and leveraging. I had to learn to both listen to others and myself. Most listen so they can talk, I learned to listen to learn. I can be more present, get to the heart of what is needed and also show greater empathy. I learn daily; having a growth mindset is critical to success. We have to keep learning and expanding ourselves. And lastly, I had to learn to leverage those around me and also my time. Delegation can be scary and hard, and it is also necessary; no one can do it all. Asking for help and leveraging your team is imperative in achieve our goals. With time, it is the same – how can I use my time to its highest and best use. It is not about how many hours we work, it is about the work we do in those hours.
I think these are strong lessons for anyone to embrace. They are all skills that can be improved on and will make us better in our personal and professional lives.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
The biggest challenge I face is my passion and desire to do it all! I am an idea girl. I get new ( and what I think are amazing) ideas daily. The creativity is great, yet sometimes it is followed by lack of execution and follow through. I have implemented a system called the Idea File. When a new idea comes to mind, it goes into the Idea File. Every 90 days I do a review of my annual business plan and goals. As I review it I pair it with my ideas and ask – Based on my goals for the next 90 days, what are the BEST ideas that support achieving the goal? This helps me to narrow the focus, choose the ones that make the most sense and it allows me to still be creative without losing focus. I do not pick more than 3 ideas at a time; if I accomplish and complete one, I can add the next one. But no more than 3 at a time.
