We were lucky to catch up with Clarivel Rosanna Martinez Gross recently and have shared our conversation below.
Clarivel Rosanna, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Clarivel Rosanna Martinez Gross is my name. Originally from the Dominican Republic, I have lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for the past seven years. I love to spend time with my family, traveling, and listening to music. I enjoy challenges, and I don’t mind change. My four children are Jeyden (11), Liangie (15), Dianny (23), and Adry (28).
In this new stage of my life, teaching children helped me discover my purpose. My mother, a teacher for almost 30 years, has been my biggest inspiration. Following her death, I decided to honor her memory by going into early childhood education and starting my own daycare in 2022 under the name TATA’S DAY CARE LLC—”TATA” was my mom’s nickname.
TATA’S DAY CARE LLC is a licensed group child care facility serving 12 children in the state of Michigan, with Level 5- Demonstrating Quality (the highest quality Level), approved by Great Start to Quality.
As an early childhood educator I strive to be at the forefront by acquiring knowledge about child development, that is why I obtained the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential for Bilingual Family Child Care at Grand Rapids Community College In 2023, I am working towards the Associate’s Degree in ECE at Muskegon Community College, in addition, I have over 200 hours of training in MiRegistry (includes training under infants, toddlers, preschoolers, business, and other categories).
In my brief tenure in the field of early childhood education, I have had the opportunity to assist other women by guiding them as they launch their own child care programs and obtain new licenses. I like pushing my people to develop their abilities and venture beyond their comfort zone.
I have had the opportunity to serve for several community-based institutions and programs, such as The Libre Institute, (providing care during events), Puertas Abiertas (offering women guidance on how to empower themselves and open their own business), and Michigan Women Forward (being the bridge for other providers to take advantage of the benefits of a Development Program).
Also through GRCC’s Play and Learn child care provider cohort, I observed, learned, and interacted with other early childhood professionals about using materials aimed at developing and improving the quality of teaching strategies.
My program works hand in hand with Great Start to Quality, First Steps Kent, Vibrant Futures and Wonderschool to maintain the quality of our program and have the tools necessary to grow and as added value, at we are members of: The National Association for the Education of Young Children-NAEYC, The Michigan Association for the Education of Young Children-MIAEYC, ChildCare Aware of America, HighScope and West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
I am also part of the Kent County Latina Family Child Care Entrepreneur Network, Advisor and Co-Chair of Mainspring Early Care Alliance.
To support active learning, creativity, critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving, I scaffold the children’s learning process and facilitate investigation, discovery, and experiences. As an early childhood educator and child care provider, I believe that every child is unique and has their own strengths and ways of relating to the world. I do this by utilizing the children’s innate desire to learn through play.
In my program, I acknowledge and encourage diversity, equity, and inclusion. Anyhow of origin, nationality, ethnicity, religion, language, family structure, I ensure that all children and their families are accepted and loved.
I am passionate about early childhood education, so every day I try to be part of organizations and programs that can help me to be more prepared to educate and support the children in my program and their families.
Regardless of the time, I want to assist the kids grow up to be great people who are self-sufficient, successful, emotionally stable, and ready for any challenge. I want their life to be filled with love, for them to shine with their light, and for them to be able to work hard to reach their goals.
Because of the commitment I have to my family and my community, I will continue to work to help future generations become thoughtful, balanced and committed human beings.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
I had good teachers: My mother Pura Gross, who teaches me to put love into everything I do, she was an example of self-denial, an admirable, tireless woman and my father, Adriano Martinez, who was a very intelligent, enterprising, organized man, with a great sense of justice and honor.
