We recently connected with Claudia Chicas and have shared our conversation below.
Claudia, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Where do I get my work ethic from? As a first-generation Salvadoran American, I strive to honor my parents’ sacrifices by making everything they endured worthwhile. Growing up I watched them work three jobs to keep a roof over our heads and provide for us, all in the hope that I could have a better future. Their resilience and dedication set a powerful example of what it means to have a strong work ethic.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As a Houston-based freelance photographer, I specialize in capturing the unique beauty and essence of each moment. My work ranges from event photography to intimate portrait sessions, always striving to deliver high-quality, meaningful images that reflect my clients’ visions. What excites me most about photography is its ability to preserve emotions and tell stories—whether it’s the joy of a celebration, the quiet intimacy of a portrait, or the vibrant energy of an event.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to expand my services and collaborate with more creatives and brands. Whether it’s capturing personal milestones or working on artistic projects, my goal is to create images that resonate and leave a lasting impact. Stay tuned for upcoming projects and opportunities—I’m always eager to bring new visions to life!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One of the most valuable pieces of advice I can give is that knowledge is power. Never stop learning—being open to new ideas and skills will benefit you in countless ways, especially in your career.
For those starting in photography, investing in a mirrorless camera is a great decision. It offers exceptional quality, even for beginners, and is a worthwhile investment in the long run. Whether you choose Canon, Nikon, or Sony, all these brands offer excellent mirrorless options—it ultimately comes down to what feels most comfortable for you.
Lastly, always prioritize your clients’ vision. Let them know you are there to support them, bring their ideas to life, and help build their confidence. A strong connection with your clients not only enhances their experience but also creates truly meaningful photographs.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
For me, my sister has been one of the most influential people in helping me develop my skills and navigate challenges in photography. She introduced me to the craft when she worked at JC Penney Portraits, and from there, I fell in love with capturing moments through a lens. Her guidance in those early stages gave me a strong foundation and the confidence to pursue photography professionally.
Beyond my sister, my parents have played a huge role in shaping my work ethic and determination. Watching them work tirelessly to provide for our family instilled in me the drive to push forward, learn continuously, and always strive for excellence in my work.
Having a great support system has also been invaluable. My boyfriend of over 12 years has been my biggest supporter, always encouraging me to pursue my dreams and helping in any way he can. His mother—my future mother-in-law—has also played a significant role by providing a space where I could focus on school and stay dedicated to my aspirations.
Additionally, connecting with other creatives—whether local artists, photographers, or designers—has helped me refine my skills and expand my perspective. Being part of a creative community has not only provided inspiration but also valuable knowledge that has helped me grow in my career.
