Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Clinton Blackwell, Jr.. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Clinton, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever had any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
When it comes to overcoming Writer’s Block, it can be super difficult. The steps that I take are pretty simple. First, I simply try two or three more times. Second, I come to the realization that the creative energy has ran out. Third, I just live. As in by going through my day to day process and take the time to appreciate life and all that it has for me. Lastly, God just does the rest by refueling my tank of creativity so that I can eradicate that Writer’s Block. It’s the same cycle pretty much every time so I don’t try to switch up or change methods; I just leave it right where it is.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My full name is Clinton Lee Blackwell Jr. I am 31 years old. I was born in Lawton, OK and currently reside in Oklahoma City, OK. My mother and father are from North Carolina. We came to Oklahoma only because my father served in the military. I graduated from Cameron University with a BA in Theatre Arts. I started my craft during college when I heard my dorm roommate create and recite his own songs without using profanity and still stay relevant and positive. He is my main influence after God. Once I heard his released songs, that’s when I started my journey with writing my own songs. I am primarily focused on making a difference within my community. Not something super impactful worldwide, but more so personal in someone’s life to where their perspective can be shifted into a more positive light. I love making music. That is what my passion is and I want to create sounds that uplift others especially during those times when they are feeling downtrodden. I have several albums located on Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube. My stage name is Psych the Wordsmith. I am planning on releasing more music and content on all of my social media accounts to build on more engagement and traction so everyone can be in the loop.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three areas I would say would be that of: patience, humility, and discipline. The best advice I could give is to keep believing in yourself and never doubt yourself for one second. Be slow to get angry, be mindful and have consideration for others. Be open minded and be okay with the fact that there are others that may be better than you. That’s okay, but that doesn’t mean they are your superior. Be realistic and understand how far you’ve came and don’t just focus on where you are right now. Progression is key. Practice is purpose. Everyone’s growth is different, always remember that and remain humble within the entire process. “Those who exalt themselves will be humbled, but those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was just being there for me. Always supporting me. Out of all the times, I believe the biggest occurrence was that of my performance that I had for a competition. They showed up and watched me take the stage with confidence and effortlessness. However, beyond that, they were always there for me when I had fallen mentally or financially. They were always there to pick me up during my extreme darkest times, especially when I was on the verge of feeling nonexistent or even worthless. They were always there to remind me of why I was placed here in this world. They always stuck by my side and still do to this day.
