We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Coach Miller. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Coach below.
Coach, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from life and just working through challenges. I’ve lived my entire life in close proximity to all of the pitfalls and setbacks that can befall someone like myself, but through the grace and mercy of GOD, I am still here. My resilience and grit comes from having no choice and making a way regardless. You don’t ask for loss and setbacks, etc. but when presented with these challenges you can either choose to stop or keep going, knowing that both options will cost you something. My resilience comes from never wanting to quit and never being decidedly defeateded to a point of not continuing.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I currently manage a small non profit and Virginia Main Street program in Ashland, Virginia that allows me to steer economic development through community development. Ashland is a very unique community with tons of kind people, so the work is easy, even if its plentiful. People always make the difference in any equation. I get the chance to work with folks of all backgrounds which broadens my experiences and allow me to learn more. We also get to throw some of the best events in the Town of Ashland like Train Day every April, and Light Up The Tracks.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think the most important three things to have on any journey is patience, understanding, and the ability to actively listen. The best way to improve your relationship with those three things is actively practicing them without bias and judgement. All of the information is already in the world, you just have to put yourself in position to receive it.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
With one decade of life left, I would seek to be closer to GOD and be in service to my fellow humans. That’s the ultimate test that we are all here to pass. Everything else is just a distraction.
