We recently connected with Colby Holiday and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Colby, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
As someone who packed up and moved to a new country sight unseen in just 10 days, I know all about risk.
I was born in a small town to teenage parents, and if I had let fear dictate my choices, my future would have been shaped by circumstance. But my parents and grandparents wanted more for me. No dream was too big, no idea too far-fetched — they supported it all. That foundation gave me the confidence to take risks, but beyond that, I wanted more for myself. I wanted to see the world and write about it. I just had no idea how to make that happen. At first, it felt impossible. I didn’t know anyone doing what I wanted to do, and I definitely didn’t have a blueprint. But I knew one thing: if I wanted a different life, I had to be willing to take chances.
I was tired of waiting for people to travel with me, so I started traveling solo. First, it was small…just the next state over for a quick getaway to Destin, Florida. But then, I pushed further — a month in Spain, a solo trip to Dubai. Then I went all in — living in South Korea for a year, followed by 9 months in Madrid, then 3.5 years in Mexico, a place I had never even visited before moving there.
I learned that the reward is always greater than the risk. If I hadn’t stepped out of my comfort zone, I wouldn’t have experienced the world the way I have. I wouldn’t have built a career doing what I love. There is no perfect moment. The leap creates the opportunity.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a travel writer, photographer, and award-winning content creator behind the Wold of a Wanderer brand, who helps travelers see the world through a culture-curious lens. I’ve built a career traveling the globe, sharing stories, and partnering with brands and destinations to inspire others to explore in meaningful ways. But beyond that, I’m passionate about helping other travel creators land paid partnerships and turn their passion into a sustainable business.
What excites me most is the impact and showing people, especially those who don’t always see themselves represented in travel media, that the world is theirs to explore. Whether it’s through my long-term partnership with Expedia, collaborations with tourism boards, or teaching creators how to work with brands, I love that my work bridges the gap between storytelling, business, and real-world experiences.
I’m also expanding my work in sleep tourism, alongside my partner who is a certified sleep coach. Together we hope to film a travel series that explores the intersection of travel and rest. We want to highlight destinations that prioritize wellness, showcase unique sleep experiences around the world, and educate people on the power of quality rest no matter where they are.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are consistency, adaptability, and a commitment to always learning. No matter what field you’re in, it’s not about who’s the most talented, it’s about who keeps showing up. There were plenty of times when I didn’t see immediate results, but I stayed consistent in creating, pitching, and building relationships. If you’re just starting out, don’t let slow progress discourage you. Keep going.
Another thing is, that growth never stops. Whether it’s refining your craft, understanding new industry trends, or learning from those ahead of you, staying curious and open is key. Invest in courses, attend workshops, and surround yourself with people who push you to level up, and don’t be afraid to ask for help!
I also had to learn the power of adaptability. Reading Who Moved My Cheese? completely shifted my mindset on change. Nothing in this industry (or in life) is permanent. The ability to pivot when things don’t go as planned is what separates those who succeed from those who get stuck. Embracing change, looking for new opportunities, and being willing to reinvent yourself is essential.
For those early in their journey, I say, stay consistent, keep learning, and be flexible. The people who win aren’t the ones who never face challenges, but the ones who refuse to quit.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
One book that had a huge impact on my development is The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. It completely shifted how I approach my mornings, and ultimately, my days. One of the biggest takeaways was the power of a structured morning routine. Before reading the book, I used to wake up and jump straight into work or social media, but The Miracle Morning taught me the importance of starting the day with intention.
The concept of S.A.V.E.R.S. (Silence, Affirmations, Visualization, Exercise, Reading, and Scribing) has been life-changing! I realized that how I start my morning sets the tone for everything else. Even when I’m traveling, I make it a point to incorporate elements of this routine, whether it’s journaling, meditating, or simply taking a moment of silence before starting my day.
Another powerful lesson was the idea that small, consistent habits create big results. You don’t have to make these huge, sweeping changes overnight — it’s the small, intentional actions you take every day. Just be 1% better than you were the day before. This mindset has helped me not only in business but in life.
Ultimately, The Miracle Morning reinforced that if you want to change your life, you have to take control of your time, and it starts the moment you wake up.
