Meet Colin Connell

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Colin Connell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Colin, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

By pushing through the dull and boring. In a lot of creative industries such as music or film there’s a process in which you have parts you really enjoy such as Filming fight scenes or laying down vocal tracks. There are also times where you have to do the boring and dull to make your product great. You have to mix and master music though a tedious process whenever you get the final product of whatever you’re doing it sparks more creativity. That being said always push through the dull and boring!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Hello! My name is Colin Connell and I am a worship leader and the Co-Creative director for an independent film company called imperial light pictures. As a kid I grew up very Atypical I was never really “good at school” I put that in quotes because I know it’s a common cliche, but it’s true. I would go through my day not really understanding much except my music classes. In 6th grade I joined band where I played the euphonium and choir. Saying I thrived here would be an understatement. I absolutely loved every second of it. This passion stayed with me into high school where I joined marching band and jazz band as well. I was in 2 choirs and 2 bands along with an after school music club. Along with all of this I was also on the worship team at Twin Rivers church. Fast forward to 2020 I graduate. Next I go to Jefferson College to get my Associates in music. Here I was trained classically in voice and piano which sparked my love for music even more. About a year later I graduated and was offered a position at Elevate Life Church to be the Executive Worship leader. I’ve been doing that ever since! I absolutely love every second of it! That same year I was approached by one of my best friends Emmitt Rodgers to star in a Short film titled “Gullivers Bad Day” in which I took that opportunity quickly! Time passes we film it lose the footage then re-film it! After that we decided to make a sequel and premiere it at the Melba in Desoto Missouri. After the premiere we thought we needed one more. During the filming process of the third film Emmitt reached out asking if I’d be interested in joining the team officially as Co-Creative director alongside himself. Since then we’ve been making a lot of creative content including a big project and my directorial debut “Dawn” now in production! I love doing everything I do! I am now part of a group called “The worship shed” who are a group of worship leaders who get together and lead worship across the Saint Louis area! It’s truly been an honor to get to grow alongside all of them! God has blessed me with such a great way of being creative!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. Don’t stop.

-Push through the tough times. Being creative is not easy at all. Keep going, regardless of numbers keep making your art.

2. Always strive to be better

-Regardless of how good you are or THINK you are there’s always a way to be better. Think outside of the box. Don’t settle for stagnation. Keep growing your art people WILL recognize that.

3. Don’t do it alone

-Your greatest Asset as a creative is other people. Whether that’s sharing what you have just to get a reaction or cooperating on a project, this will allow you to build off of each others ideas to create something better. I advise getting someone who you view as better at that art and someone who is not as well versed in your art. Get someone who can help you grow and someone you can help grow.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

I would have to say fatigue. I’m in a place in life where I’m busy doing something creative a majority of the time. To be honest sometimes it’s very tiring to say the least. Something I’ve been attempting to do is let other people do it. As a creative I really like being hands on, but sometimes other people need to take over so you can rest.
