We recently connected with Colleen Kennedy and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Colleen , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I am number 6 of 11 children. We did not have technology, cell phones and had to learn from a very young age on how to become self sufficient. You figured out at a very young age that comparing yourself to other siblings or friends was a waste of time. It was more important to figure out your own talents and gifts and persevere toward your own goals. Parents may or may not be able to attend your recitals, games and ski meets, but there was always someone there who knew your were a Dwyer and would encourage you.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have been working at The Houstonian Hotel, Club and Spa since 1984. I have been in many roles, including Fitness Director, Spa Director, Group Exercise Director. I am currently still teaching group exercise instructor and teach strength training, Step aerobics and high intensity workouts. Teaching exercise classes is my passion. My job as Director of Membership Sales is to grow the membership. When I began in this Membership role in 1992, we had approximately 800 Memberships. We now have over 5,100 memberships and will be at a wait list soon. I heard a Pastor once say…your career is what you are paid to do. Your passion is what your made to do. If you are able to combine your career and your passion, you will ever work a day in your life. At The Houstonian, that is what I have been able to accomplish. I love helping our employees and our Members “Get To A Healthier Place”, and we have actually trademarked that slogan. The Houstonian Club is always focused on helping our customers age 6 weeks to over 100, have a safe place to visit where they can get away from the city, while still in the city.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Visionary, Persistent and flexible. Every successful business person needs to step away from their day to day schedule to brainstorm, benchmark and discover new ways to do business. I set aside time every day, whether it’s a walk, reading a book or article or meditation. Once you’ve decided on a plan, follow through, be persistent and stay true to your goals. Lastly, as you work toward a goal, be somewhat flexible in case you need to pivot, due to the economic climate and what is trending.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
Both my mother and father taught me the value of hard work. They always encouraged me to look my best, be my best and do my best. Also, my mom told me this saying “Your career is what your paid to do. Your passion is what your made to do.” If you can find a way to do both, you will never work a day in your life.
