Meet Collin

We recently connected with Collin and have shared our conversation below.

Collin , thank you so much for joining us today and appreciate you talking about a sensitive topic. It’s unfortunately relevant to so many in the community as layoffs have been on the rise recently, and so we’d appreciate hearing your story and how you overcame being let go?

Getting laid off is an experience that shakes you to your core. Even when you know it has nothing to do with your performance, it still stings. It’s a hit to your ego, your confidence, and your sense of security. The first reaction is often shock, followed by a wave of emotions—anger, self-doubt, fear. I felt all of it.

In the days and weeks that followed, I learned that healing wasn’t just about updating my resume or jumping into the job search. I needed time to process. Journaling became a daily ritual—some days, I vented; other days, I reflected on what I truly wanted in my next chapter. Therapy was incredibly helpful, and so were the conversations I had with my family and my trusted group of girlfriends. That combination became my safe space—a circle where I could unpack my emotions, be vulnerable, and feel fully supported as I navigated what came next.

One of the biggest lessons I learned was the importance of self-reflection. Instead of rushing into something new just to fill the gap, I gave myself permission to slow down. I asked myself tough questions: What kind of work actually fulfills me? What kind of environment allows me to thrive? That period of centering myself made all the difference in how I approached what came next.

Another crucial takeaway? Don’t burn bridges. As tempting as it might be to leave in a blaze of frustration, I knew that relationships mattered. I maintained strong connections with colleagues and leaders, and to this day, those relationships have been instrumental in my career. The world is small, and your professional network is invaluable.

Looking back, I wouldn’t wish a layoff on anyone, but I also recognize how much I grew because of it. It forced me to pause, reflect, and reset. It reminded me that setbacks are temporary, but the way we handle them can shape what comes next. If you’re going through this right now, know that it’s okay to take a beat. Give yourself grace. Lean on your people. And trust that the next opportunity is out there, waiting for you.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I started Lily & Boothe after being laid off, turning an unexpected moment into the opportunity to build something meaningful. I’ve always been drawn to event planning — there’s something powerful about creating experiences that bring people together and leave a meaningful, lasting impression. What began as a leap of faith quickly grew into a business rooted in passion, creativity, care, and connection.

At L&B, we specialize in designing and executing events that feel deeply personal, intentional, and unforgettable. While weddings hold a special place in my heart, our work spans far beyond that. We plan everything from corporate gatherings and nonprofit events to deeply meaningful celebrations of life. These moments — each so different in purpose, tone, and audience — keep us grounded in what matters most: honoring people’s stories.

The variety of events we take on challenges us to think creatively, serve a wide range of clients, and adapt with heart. It’s a privilege to step into so many meaningful moments — whether it’s a joyful wedding weekend, a mission-driven fundraiser, or a gathering to honor a loved one’s legacy. If someone wants to celebrate it, we can create it. For us, it’s never just about logistics or design — it’s about purpose, presence, and creating experiences people will carry with them long after the last toast.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Reflecting on my journey, three qualities stand out as most impactful: relationship-building, empathy, and an unwavering attention to detail. The relationships I’ve cultivated — with clients, vendor partners, and peers — have been the cornerstone of my work, enabling trust, collaboration, and long-term success. Empathy has shaped the way I lead and serve; it allows me to truly understand what matters to others, anticipate needs before they’re spoken, and create experiences that resonate on a personal level. And attention to detail is non-negotiable — in this work, it’s the smallest touches that elevate an experience from good to unforgettable.

For those early in their careers, I’d offer this: prioritize relationships and show up as someone others are excited to work with. Let empathy guide your decisions, especially when challenges arise. Embrace the details — they matter more than you think. And most importantly, stay committed to growth. Build in time to debrief after every project. Ask for honest feedback from clients, vendors, and your team. Excellence isn’t a fixed destination — it’s something you move toward by learning, refining, and showing up better each day.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

This is, without question, one of my favorite parts of the job — partnering with incredibly talented people across the event and production world. Whether you’re a florist, photographer, designer, rental company, caterer, stationer, entertainment pro, or venue manager, I’m constantly inspired by those who share a passion for creating thoughtful, unforgettable experiences. There’s something truly energizing about collaborating with creatives who not only care about the details, but understand the impact of what we do.

If that sounds like you, I’d love to connect. You can reach me through lilyandboothe.com or find me on Instagram @lilyandboothe. I’m always excited to build meaningful partnerships that bring exceptional work to life.
