We were lucky to catch up with Collin Mccauley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Collin, we are so appreciative of you taking the time to open up about the extremely important, albeit personal, topic of mental health. Can you talk to us about your journey and how you were able to overcome the challenges related to mental issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
Being a young person in today’s world is very difficult, and being faced with so many facts that show the world is falling apart makes preserving even more difficult than ever. Falling into a rabbit hole of despair is often easy and hard to escape once you are in it. I have been given great advice that you cannot help the world be better if you are suffering. Using this to find a better place for me to sustain my mental health has led to creating more profound and impactful change in the community around me. For others who feel despair creeping in, I advise taking a moment, knowing that your feelings are valid and that the world is a bad place sometimes. But if you can get to a place where you are better, you will be able to help right the wrongs of injustice you see in the world around you.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I run a food website that recommends food worldwide to people interested in finding unique places to eat. I specialize in finding holes-in-the-wall as I find these restaurants are the best way to enjoy the uniqueness of a city’s culture. From Athens to Honolulu, I have food in cities for everyone, ranging from seafood in Memphis to pastries in Paris. I work my hardest to find the best food possible in each city I go to and then rank them for your pleasure. My website has all the information, and it’s best to view the food by city based on where you live or are traveling to enjoy food. Additionally, I have an Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok where you can find live reactions, recaps of cities, and previews of cities I have on the agenda. I hope you will check it out, and I promise once you do, you will never need to find food recommendations anywhere else again.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I have a strong sense of empathy for everyone in the world, and I feel this is what helps me relate to people wherever I travel. Thus, making friends and getting even more amazing mom-and-pop recommendations all over the world as my social circle grows worldwide. Additionally, a skill that is very useful for my line of work is my ability to throw back food. I used to dabble in competitive eating, and this massive stomach allowed me to enjoy seven meals a day in a new city and wake up hungry to do it again the next day. I also can go with the flow, which allows me not to stress when plans get changed or messed up in some way. This allows me to enjoy every experience for what it is in the moment. Living in the moment is more of a skill than anything, and sometimes it is hard to do so, but the more practice you enjoy where you are, the better you will be for experiencing what you have in every moment.
Most of these skills are honed through living life and being cognizant of your emotions and how they impact your situation. But as far as the ability to eat a lot of food goes, that is just a God-given talent I have that I try to use for the greater good these days.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
Dune has easily been the most impactful book I have ever read. I have read all the original six by Frank Herbert and many of his other novels, and I must say I love everything the man writes. From his thoughts on politics to philosophy, Frank has some very profound insight into the world we live in today. Every time I read some of his writings, I find myself profoundly thinking about the world around me, analyzing it with a new eye that is very critical. It is beautiful. The litany against fear is, of course, an iconic Dune quote. While I have many from Frank I am fond of, I will share this: “To suspect your own mortality is to know the beginning of terror, to learn irrefutable that you are mortal is to know the end of terror.”
