We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Collin Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Collin, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Sometimes it just strikes you in that moment, out of the blue. Drop what you’re doing and write it down. Practice that riff, memorize the melody, record a rough draft. Some days you have nothing, and you can be completely blank for days, even weeks. I got two other guys in my band so it’s nice to have ideas bounce off of each other.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
It’s really cool to see Blip come to life over the years. Blip wasn’t really supposed to make it this far, but I’m glad it did. That goes for Blip, Blip Records, and all of the cool little side projects. Blip Records is in full swing right now, so there’s a lot of art and creativity being thrown all over the place, and it’s just great to be a part of it. Blip just put out a new remix album for the one year anniversary of Organized Anarchy, which is crazy because it feels like that was put out yesterday. I don’t care if my music has three listeners or three million listeners, I’m proud of what I do.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Keep grinding, learn from mistakes, and most importantly, don’t give a single dog turd about anybody trying to put you down or say you’re not going to amount to anything in music. Anybody can make music, and anybody can blow up at anytime. Right time, right place, and all it takes is one big song to change your life. Learn to let go and do whatever you want because life is meaningless, so you might as well do what you love.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always open to collaborate with anybody, that’s one of the main reasons why I made Blip Records. I feature, I produce, I do whatever. I run all the social media accounts for Blip so hit up the DMs. E-mail at [email protected].
