Meet Comika Hartford

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Comika Hartford a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Comika , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

Every Wednesday, the B3 film collective gets together and we just spitball ideas. Sometimes I prepare and other times I just throw stuff out from the top of my head. We all take turns and pitch to each other and see what sticks. It’s been a really great way to see what has legs versus what might be interesting but is more of a situation and not really a story. Finding one’s peer group is definitely integral to progressing as an artist.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Well, I’m a freelance screenwriter I do novel adaptations for a lit agency out of Atlanta and I’m also one of the founders of the B3 film collective with my best friends, Torian Allen, and Krys ‘K’ Batiste. We specialize in projects that are creepy, unexpected, and force you to examine things from another perspective. These two are my twisty brother, and sister, I often referred to us as the Corvid Trio.

Our first horror /comedy short THE INTERVIEW was shot over the pandemic and took a satirical look at the problematic hiring and renting practices during that time period. Not long after that we decided to band together and keep putting our weird out into the world. Our current project THE LUCKY CARD is in pre-production and focuses on the plight of a graphic artist trying to pay off her student loans in the age of AI, who gets taken in by a MLM with supernatural repercussions… it’s a wild ride!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Finish what you start even if it’s not going to be perfect… or even what you intended! Always put your script through warm and cold reads from people you trust who know what they’re talking about (not just your mom or bff’s!) And never be afraid to learn another way to do something. Once I accepted that being a storyteller means that you never stop learning I’ve been a lot kinder to myself & more willing to take risks.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

The B3 collective is definitely interested in collaborating with other like-minded artists. If you’re a creative and love twisty tales full of irony and social commentary definitely reach out to us on social media, our info is on the poster.
