We recently connected with Conley Wessel and have shared our conversation below.
Conley, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my purpose in sports performance training by chance. It all started when my son wanted to improve in flag football, and we began training together on the weekends. Soon, his teammates joined in, and before I knew it, I was working with more and more young athletes. What started as a simple way to support my son turned into a passion for helping athletes develop their skills and reach new levels of performance.
Seeing athletes work hard, overcome challenges, and grow in confidence fuels my drive every day. So many athletes are looking for ways to excel, and knowing that I can be part of that journey keeps pushing me forward. This passion naturally led to the creation of TurfBlox—a training tool designed to help athletes refine their movement and improve performance. What began as a father-son activity has grown into something much bigger, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the success of athletes at all levels.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the creator of TurfBlox, a specialized training tool designed to enhance athletic performance by optimizing lower limb mechanics. My journey into sports performance training started unexpectedly—I was simply trying to help my son improve in flag football. As more of his teammates joined our training sessions, I realized how much I enjoyed helping athletes refine their skills and unlock their potential. That passion led me to pursue certifications in personal training and sports performance, and ultimately, it sparked the creation of TurfBlox.
What makes TurfBlox unique is its ability to allow field athletes to train in cleats, on the field, and at the right joint angles—something that was missing from traditional training tools.
What excites me most is seeing how athletes and trainers incorporate TurfBlox into their programs. The product has been used at all levels, from youth athletes to professionals, and the feedback has been incredible. Trainers often tell me that once they start using TurfBlox, their creativity expands, allowing them to develop drills that translate directly to game performance.
Looking ahead, I’m focused on expanding the impact of TurfBlox through educational resources and training programs. We recently launched the TurfBlox Video Library, a collection of drill series designed to help athletes improve performance. These videos provide structured training guidance and showcase how TurfBlox can be integrated into any athlete’s routine.
My goal is to provide tools and knowledge that truly make a difference for athletes. I’m grateful for the journey so far and excited about what’s ahead
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back I’d have to say adaptability, persistence and problem-solving have been the most impactful.
Adaptability – My journey into sports performance training and product development wasn’t planned; it evolved naturally. I had to continuously learn, adjust, and improve—whether it was refining my coaching methods, figuring out how to manufacture TurfBlox, or navigating the business side of things. My advice to those early in their journey is to stay open to new opportunities and be willing to step outside of your comfort zone. You don’t need to have everything figured out from the start—embrace learning as you go.
Persistence – There were plenty of challenges along the way, from not knowing how to price my first training session to spending weeks testing different TurfBlox prototypes. If I had stopped at the first sign of difficulty, none of this would exist today. For anyone starting their journey, I’d say: keep pushing forward, even when progress feels slow. Every obstacle is an opportunity to grow, and resilience is often the difference between success and giving up too soon.
Problem-Solving – TurfBlox was born out of a need to solve a real problem—helping an athlete establish better movement patterns in cleats. When I couldn’t find the right tool, I built one. The ability to recognize problems and create solutions is invaluable. My advice? Stay observant and ask yourself how you can add value—whether in business, coaching, or personal growth. The best ideas often come from solving problems that others overlook.
For those just getting started, embrace learning, stay persistent, and look for ways to provide real solutions. The journey won’t always be easy, but those who keep adapting, pushing forward, and problem-solving will find success in unexpected ways.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed, my first instinct is to step away and reset. Instead of forcing myself to push through the stress, I take a break from whatever is causing the overwhelm and shift my focus to something completely different. This helps me clear my mind and regain perspective before tackling the challenge again.
I’ve found that engaging in other activities—whether it’s working out, listening to music, or walking on the beach—allows me to mentally reset. These activities give my mind the space it needs to process things subconsciously, so when I return, I often see the situation through a fresh, clearer lens.
For anyone struggling with overwhelm, my advice would be:
Step away when you feel stuck. Giving yourself even a short break can make a huge difference.
Find an outlet that completely removes you from the stressor—exercise, music, or being in nature all work well.
Trust the reset—more often than not, you’ll come back with a better perspective and a clearer mind to handle the situation effectively.
Overwhelm is part of the journey, but learning to manage it in a healthy way keeps you moving forward without burnout.
