We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Connor Frost a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Connor with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I discovered my work ethic through finding activities and hobbies that I enjoyed. Because I enjoyed them, I wanted to always be doing them, whether that’s music, teaching, or whatever else.
I’ll never forget when I played in a band for the first time in middle school. We were terrible. But I remember thinking to myself, even then, that this feeling of playing together, and creating this sound, was incredible, and that I never wanted it to go away. Working hard on music, and building a career in music was simply meant to be.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’ve been a musician, songwriter, producer, and educator for almost two decades now. Growing up around a musical family, it almost felt inevitable, but at the same time, it was a natural choice. I made the decision early in my twenties that I wanted to be self-employed, so that I could have control of my schedule and record and tour whenever I wanted. That choice, while difficult, led to multiple album releases, features on esteemed publications like “American Songwriter”, touring the country as well as internationally, and starting my dream music business – helping songwriters to turn their ideas into their first collection of songs.
I think what I’m most proud of has been my ability to build a life not around my music, but through it. It’s been the vehicle that’s led me to discover friendships, partnerships, passion, and countless opportunities.
I’m in the midst of releasing a single every eight weeks for my new, solo project, aptly named “Connor Lin Frost”. I’m also working with about two dozen fellow songwriters in the context of my online mentorship program, helping them to consistently and confidently turn their ideas into release-ready singles and albums.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The first skill that has served me well is learning how to write. In all senses of the craft. Copywriting, email writing, prose, songwriting, lyrics, etc. The written word is so powerful, and writing is the best way to organize your thoughts and turn ideas into tangible outcomes.
A quality that’s served me well is being an action-taker. I tend to act on an idea rather than talk about it for years. Doing so has led me to touring the world, producing my own music, and leaving my full-time career which I did not love (high school teacher), to getting to do what I do love (writing songs, and helping others write songs).
Another skill and quality which is specific to what I do, which has helped me greatly is my musicianship and ear. I’ve been able to capitalize on that strength, and I feel blessed to have been born with a level of natural ability, but also have the support system growing up to encourage me not to fight my artistic tendencies.
My advice for people would be to find the intersection between what you’re passionate about and what you’re good at. Go after that. That’s the sweet spot.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
What’s been most helpful in me overcoming any challenges and fears to then build the life I’ve wanted has been mentorship.
There’s no substitute for working with and under those who have “been there done that”, and can hold you accountable along the way.
Shoutout to all of my teachers, mentors, and of course, my parents, for helping me pave the way for where I am today, doing what I love.
