We were lucky to catch up with Constance Jones recently and have shared our conversation below.
Constance, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Thank you for posing such an important question. As someone who has often found myself as the only person in the room who looks like me, I understand the unique challenges that come with it. However, I’ve learned to turn those challenges into opportunities for growth and success. First and foremost, I believe in the power of self-confidence. By embracing my worth and expertise, I can overcome any doubts or biases that may arise. When I walk into a room, I make sure my knowledge, skills, and achievements speak for themselves, allowing my voice to be heard and respected by others.
Additionally, I have learned the importance of owning my unique perspective. Diversity goes beyond physical appearance; it encompasses a wide range of experiences and ideas. By recognizing the unique value, I bring to the table, I am empowered to share my thoughts confidently and make a meaningful impact in any conversation or decision-making process.
Building strong relationships and alliances has also been crucial in my journey. By seeking out mentors and allies who understand and appreciate the importance of diversity and inclusion, I have found support and a sense of belonging. These relationships not only provide me with guidance but also offer opportunities that might have been harder to access without their support.
Lastly, I am committed to continuous learning and growth. Keeping abreast of industry trends, attending professional development events, and seeking out resources allows me to stay relevant and bring fresh and innovative perspectives to the table. This commitment not only enhances my skills but also helps foster a culture of inclusion and openness within organizations.
In conclusion, being the only one in the room does not define my success. Through self-confidence, embracing my unique perspective, building relationships, and continuous learning, I have learned to be effective and successful regardless of external factors. I hope that my experiences inspire others to embrace and celebrate their uniqueness, and to recognize that diversity is a strength that drives success in any environment.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
A childhood filled with constant moves, new cultures, and even the occasion even the occasional encounter with formidable figures of authority. I, a military dependent, have a story that reads like an action-packed adventure novel. But amidst the swirling chaos, my parents were the steadfast anchors that guided me through the storm and transformed me into the superhero I am today.
Sure, my parents may not have possessed the ability to shoot lasers from their eyes or summon lightning with a flick of their wrists, but what they did possess were values that left an indelible mark on me. Values of hard work, adaptability, and above all, selflessness.
As Air Force active-duty members, Educators, and Social Worker superheroes, my parents taught me the importance of always putting others first. Whether it was volunteering on base or taking in a student for a short period my parents showed me the immense power of even the smallest acts of kindness and compassion.
As I ventured into adulthood, these lessons became the bedrock of my character. From dedicating my time to college volunteer work to my current career in staffing – where I get to connect individuals with fulfilling careers – carrying the torch of service my parents ignited within me. Their unwavering example proved that in the face of uncertainty and constant change, we must serve and uplift those around us.
So, when asked about the most impactful thing my parents did for me, I realize that they bestowed upon me a legacy far greater than any superpower – the legacy of compassionate superheroes who showed me that kindness, empathy, and selflessness can change the world. With these values as a guiding force, I stand as a hero in my own right – fighting for equality, championing diversity, and leaving a lasting impact on the lives I touch.
