Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cordula Weisz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Cordula, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Finding your purpose. This must be one of the hardest things for us to conquer. You kind of need to follow your heart and gut and listen carefully to see what inspires you and how we can find purpose. I think your purpose always resides in you, but sometimes its harder to tap into then others. It definitely took me some time.
It was always inside of me to search for the healthiest nutrition and products and after my husband and daughter were diagnosed with Hashimoto (an autoimmune disease) I realized that deep inside myself I felt the urge to dive into it and try to get as much information I could about different healing modalities instead of just grabbing your usual prescription drugs. Which then propelled me into holistic nutrition and I knew I had found something I was truly passionate about.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have been a producer in the entertainment industry for commercials, music videos and features for the last 30 years, and a mother of two amazing girls. When Covid hit our business came to a stand still, which finally gave me the time to dive into my other passion — holistic nutrition and wellness. While my urge was to find something for my husband and daughter’s autoimmune disease, I also found myself starting to go through Menopause. It started out with me looking for a Greens powder we could take on a daily basis. By looking more in depth into the powders on the market, I was terribly frustrated with the availability. All these powders were either not organic, or only half the ingredients were organic, or they had mainly the cheapest grasses in it but non of the more powerful and rare ingredients like nootropics I wanted to focus on. So I decided to take matters into my own hands and started working on a formula for a greens powder that would fulfill what I wanted to put into my body. I did this just for me and my family at the beginning, but after feeling so much better with more energy and not always fatigued my friends asked to try it. My friends husband had acid reflux for years and after taking our greens powder for a few weeks he felt so much better. My friends convinced me that I should make this more available for the broader audience so I started producing more and going to markets to get the product out there. I realized that I should simplify the life for other health nuts like me with easy healthy drink mixes like the superfood mushroom coffee I made for myself every day, or the mushroom cacao that helps with anxiety and insomnia and provides calm and comfort…..so really all my products come from a very selfish background – haha. What I loved I just tried to put on the market so people can now just mix a scoop of powder into their beverage and be their own healthy barista at home.
We are all about being as clean and sustainable as possible. All our ingredients are certified organic and I take big pride in sourcing as ethical as I can. I am not trying to cut corners by getting all my ingredients from China but rather pay a bit more and get what I can from the US or the native country of the herb. I have high standards for what goes into my body and I will maintain those standards for all my customers.
I am always experimenting with new ideas in the kitchen and am working on a pink latte powder next as well as a coffee alternative drink for those trying to gut caffeine entirely.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think you have to mainly believe in yourself. If you have an idea and are passionate about it – you can do it. You can do anything you set your mind to.
In the film world I had to be very organized with tracking money, crew etc, I certainly was able to use that skill for my entrepreneur life. I had to create so many excel sheets for tracking costs, ingredients, packagings etc that I definitely benefited from having had to do the same in my other world. However everything else was brand new and very intimidating. I had no idea about manufacturings, imports, MOQ, SKU’s etc. But you can learn anything nowadays. There is an abundance on knowledge out there, you just have to sift through it.
However you do have to have stamina. Usually starting a new business is hardly ever an overnight success. Just stay with it, keep moving and improving and never stop learning.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
My biggest challenge at this point is to scale up production to make it a bigger brand. It has been very frustrating dealing with co-manufacturers. There are so many I contact and never hear back from or others who are not abiding to the same standards as me. I had to loose a lot already since they were not willing to stick to my strict guidelines of not adding fillers into my products or to getting the ingredients from the suppliers I had already vetted.
I am not giving up though. I am sure there is a co-manufacturer out there who has high standards too and I will find them. It’s just all time and grit at the end of the day.
