We recently connected with Corey Davis and have shared our conversation below.
Corey, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
By placing myself in a mindset where I truly believe that I belong in every room I enter, I can overcome imposter syndrome. The core issue of imposter syndrome is the doubt about whether you deserve what lies beyond your worries. Once you let go of that disbelief, you can achieve anything.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Corey”Roc Bottom” Davis. I am a comic book writer/artist, animation director, gallery owner, and studio head. The most exciting thing about what I do is having the ability to bring anything I can think of to life across so many artistic platforms. Our brand and the art we produce are a reflection of a section of our arts community that has gone unrecognized over the years, so we created a safe space to create the art that the unsung artists of our city can produce the works they are familiar with. As of now, we are moving to a bigger facility, which is a comic book production house, print shop, animation studio, and multidisciplinary art gallery.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three skills: My imagination, discipline, and endurance. The ingredients of what a driving force is. My driving force is what guided my journey this far. If I could give any advice to anyone just starting this journey, that’s simple, just START. Your journey will never begin if you never take that first step, no matter how scary it could be.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Learning to evolve. When one chapter closes, that’s not the end of the story. Each chapter is a new beginning. Each leads into the next step on your journey. This past year has seen so many chapters, and I had to learn how to enter each chapter unafraid to write that new portion of the story. Now I see each chapter as a next step in my evolution.
