We were lucky to catch up with Corey Martire recently and have shared our conversation below.
Corey , thank you so much for joining us today and appreciate you talking about a sensitive topic. It’s unfortunately relevant to so many in the community as layoffs have been on the rise recently, and so we’d appreciate hearing your story and how you overcame being let go?
I created my business Corey Lynne Agency!
I returned from having lunch and was ready to cold call. It was Monday at 1:09 and the owner of the company called to tell me he had to let me go. Our two largest clients weren’t going to pay us until April.
I wasn’t worried as I had a final interview the next day, however a few weeks later they went with another woman who had more experience within that industry. I knew that I no longer wanted to do corporate sales. I was done making millions of dollars for other companies.
For the past few years I wanted to be a dating coach. I wrote ideas on bar napkins, put notes in my phone and would even sign up and inquire with various organizations that could help launch my business, but the timing was never right. I was unemployed and looking to get out of my old industry – there were no excuses, it was time to pursue what was always in the back of my head.
I signed up to become a certified Matchmaker and Dating Coach. I enrolled in both of the Global Love Institute’s certification programs and by October of 2019, I was taking on clients in the Northeast.
Fast forward a year, I became the Director of Sales at the Global Love Institute. I was helping folks like myself that decided after a global pandemic, they wanted a meaningful career. My role expanded; I was leading our monthly mastermind calls and was teaching the matchmaking certification while our instructor was on maternity leave. I loved the full circle moment of helping others who were in the same situation I was a couple of years before.
My role with the Institute has changed as my business has expended into a full relationship lifecycle company. I’m in the process of becoming a Sexologist and collaborating with other matchmakers to help them excel.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
In January 2024 I launched a new division, Body Positivity. At Corey Lynne Agency, we believe that love and connection should be accessible to everyone, regardless of gender, size, shape or skin tone. Our Body Positive division is a safe haven where individuals of all body types and those attracted to them, can experience positive and empowering dating journeys. Here we celebrate confidence in every form. Whether you already embrace your sexy and confident self or need a boost to get there, our expertly curated group sessions are tailored to address dating challenges, confidence building and holistic health and wealthiness. We recognize that the matchmaking industry has often overlooked this vibrant and diverse community, and we are here to change the narrative.
In the four years that I’ve been a dating and relationship expert, I found that our industry typically didn’t work with the mid-size or plus-size community. Perfectly good candidates were getting passed over because of their weight or they didn’t have potential introductions for them. As someone who is mid-size, I wanted others to know that I understood what they were going through, but more importantly that you are worthy of a partner and love.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Listen, there is never a good time to start a business. I started mine and six months later the world shut down due to a global pandemic. I didn’t think anyone was going to want to search for their partner…boy was I wrong! I was fortunate to pick an industry that was not only recession proof, but pandemic proof as well.
I had to get over the fear of everything being perfect. I tried to predict every policy and procedure before going live, I wanted a well oiled machine. I quickly learned until you roll up your sleeves and actually do it, you have no idea what to expect. How I do business now is very different from the original vision I had. Focus on the journey and the results will come later.
Many people start a business or a side hustle within their industry that they are familiar with. My advice to those that select something that is new to them, fully immerse yourself in it. Join industry associations, attend conferences, ask to schedule time with subject matter experts and compensate them for their time. Offer to take them to lunch and pick their brain or ask what their hourly consultation rate is – you will find that they are more willing o help you. Find a mentor that will take you under their wing, train you, introduce you to key players and other businesses that can help you succeed. Remember that you were once new to your industry and be kind to the new folks coming in.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I would love to collaborate with Body Positivity subject matter experts., Whether that is plus size dating apps, marketing companies that can assist with finding the individuals who want to date within the mid size or plus size community or even influencers. In particular I need to find relationship minded men who want to date women of all sizes and ethnicities.
If you don’t identify as a member of the Body Positivity community, that’s ok too, I would love to work with you as well.
