We were lucky to catch up with Corey Mekell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Corey, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from a place of humble beginnings. I know exactly what it feels like not to have anything and making the best of that. I also understand that I don’t have anyone to fall back on except for me and I know I’m not going to let myself down, regardless of how challenging the journey may get, I’m still determined to stay in the ring and accomplish every goal I’ve set for myself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My story is that of an interesting one. I started out in a male group, gained a lot of traction via YouTube doing covers of other people songs to now finding myself in Los Angeles on a continued quest following my dreams. Since making the move to the West Coast, I’ve been given, the opportunity to truly see what I made of. Working with the likes of Chris Brown, Ne-Yo, Omarion, Raven Symone, Amber, Riley, Sabrina Claudio, Jordin Sparks, Chingy, just to name a few. Has been nothing shy of seeing my dreams unfold right before my very eyes. From songwriting to vocal production, performing acting, Each career field, fulfills something different in me. that has now given me the confidence to release my own music starting this spring with my new single “Pardon Me”, from my upcoming EP “The Portal: Season 1”. This new music will give those that do not know me, a very candid understanding of exactly who I am and I for one am happy to share this project with you, as I see it being received by the masses very well.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Patience, resilience and faith. Any advice that I could give to anyone starting out on their journey it would be to not expect anything too soon. That’s really worth having for a long time. A “no” Is not a denial And believing in yourself, regardless of anyone’s opinion of you.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of growth would be that I’m no longer taking anything personal and forgiving those that never said I’m sorry.
