Meet Corinne Farr

We recently connected with Corinne Farr and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Corinne, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

I was a very shy child and always clung to my mum but when I was 4, my mum was advised to enrol me into dancing to help build my confidence and I also attended a self esteem course – both of which helped!

In high school, I was still quite shy but when I left and worked at a local cafe which was VERY social, this completely brought me out of my shell and built confidence. Since then, I’ve been very confident and worked in many jobs that involve seeing clients, presenting and I’ve done MC work (which I love!)

I think I’ve learnt over the years that you really do need to back yourself and know that you are capable of more than you realise! This builds confidence and self esteem.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I have been a dietitian for 10 years, working in clinical, private practice, university teaching and corporate based roles. I now have an online nutrition business called Corinne Farr Nutrition specialising in helping people with type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance. I love helping people with their food choices so they can manage their diabetes or insulin resistance. Since my business is online, I see clients globally which is fantastic.

My 12 week ‘Diabetes Mindset and Management program’ focusses on all facets of nutrition for blood sugar management but we also work on mindset and establishing your ‘why’ so my clients can build healthy habits for life. A big highlight for me as a dietitian, is seeing my clients achieve their health goals. I always say that they are the driver for their health and I am the navigator with the map, we get there together!

I also teach a couple of nutrition subjects at The University Of Sydney and I love seeing my students enjoy learning about nutrition, it is very inspiring!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

My top 3 recommended skills/qualities are –
Networking
Resilience
Taking any opportunity that could lead you to where you want to go

1. Networking – the power of networking is huge. I have found that if you can establish a good network of colleagues then you can always reach out for support when needed (both within an organization and when you aren’t working with them anymore). I have always created opportunities for this by joining social clubs within workplaces, leading team culture activities and asking people to have coffee with me so I can get to know them better.
2. Resilience – I know the power of resilience and am teaching my toddler so he can have these skills for life. This helps when you have setbacks and know that any setback is a learning opportunity for next time. I am also very solutions focused not problem focused and this has helped a lot for my work.
3. Taking any opportunity – I have done this quite a few times in my career. A few times, I have taken a junior role because it is in an organization that I want to work for and when I have worked hard and shown I am capable, I then have been promoted to where I want to be. So don’t be afraid to take an opportunity if it can get you to where you want to be eventually.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

The CDC reports – In any 18-month period, 33% to 50% of people with diabetes have diabetes distress. The daily management of diabetes can be alot for people to deal with. I have a strong interest in mental health and chronic disease management. I am not a psychologist so I would love to collaborate with any psychologists who would be interested in running online/in person events with me. I envisage that the events will teach people about nutrition for diabetes management but also how to manage diabetes stress and what strategies or support networks are best.
