Meet Cory Hayford

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cory Hayford. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cory below.

Cory, thank you so much for making time for us today. We can’t wait to dive into your story and the lessons you’ve learned along the way, but maybe we can start with something foundational to your success. How have you gone about developing your ability to communicate effectively?
I developed my ability to communicate effectively through trial and error. Developing effective communication skills was a gradual and ongoing process involving several key components I’ve used to help me grow. When communicating, I had to learn how to become an active listener. I get sidetracked and go on the phone when uninterested in conversations. Still, I have learned that that’s rude to the person opening up to me. I learned through experience that paying close attention to what others are saying and focusing on understanding their message rather than formulating a response helped me to stay active in a conversation. Another way I learned how to communicate effectively is by having clarity and conciseness, being able to express my ideas clearly and concisely, avoiding unnecessary jargon or complex language, and using simple sentences helped me communicate effectively I’ve always been sensitive to how others feel about my straightforwardness by trying to sugar coat what I am trying to say. Still, it always made what I was trying to communicate more complicated. I had to learn that there’s a certain way you can communicate with someone without sounding too harsh. Communication is something that has to be constantly developed. I’m still learning from my mistakes and growing from them.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am currently working as a student success coach, where I help students across schools succeed. I support students, classrooms, and the whole school, helping to ensure that students in systematically under-resourced schools receive a high-quality education that prepares them with the skills and mindset to thrive and contribute to their community. I love working as a mentor because seeing my students grow each semester from where they are from up until now puts a smile on my face. When I’m not a mentor, I work on the craft of photography. I love taking pictures of moments and sharing them. I launched my website towards the end of last year, which was exciting. Now, people can book me directly through my website for headshots and events!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey were never to create false narratives in your head. Refrain from assuming what people think. Always ask questions before assuming. Know your limits, who you are as a person, what you like, and what you don’t like so that you can establish boundaries with people. Lastly, knowing your place in people’s lives is key. When you know where you stand, you won’t be begging for people’s attention.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The number one obstacle I am currently facing is defeating the enemy within myself. There’s a saying that you are your biggest enemy, and I have never realized that until now. I get in my way a lot, so many people tell me I need to be doing certain things or why am I not doing so and so, and I always look at them and say right!?! But when it comes down to it, I never do it, and I know I have the skills and talent to do so, but I always get in my head and get scared to step out. One thing I’m doing to overcome myself is just doing it! No matter what, it is not overthinking; it is just going for it without hesitation.
