We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cory “Sauce” Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Cory “Sauce” Brown with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I think my work ethic was constructed in my DNA! From the beginning I’ve had this will to push and better myself, and it just grows exponentially with every success.
One of the mottos I created states, “Everyday is a day to be better than who you were yesterday!,” and as this drives me, I can focus on my improvement – mind, body, and soul – while knowing that success will continue to come.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Cory Brown, but I’m best known as Cory “Sauce” Brown around the world. I’m an icon in the global basketball community who is now retired from professional basketball, and now focused on creating new waves in acting, youth basketball coaching (CEO & founder of “Sauce Basketball Academy” in Sydney Australia) , motivational speaking, and community philanthropy. Additionally, I hold two university degrees in Sports Management & Marketing, and I’ve been able to handle the business and entrepreneurial life as well. The successes I’ve had have helped me to give back to communities on a higher spectrum too. The youth, the homeless, being a part of great causes and raising awareness – it warms my heart to help the world for the better. .
I’m lucky to have been blessed by GOD with some natural talents and a mountain of passion from an early age, and I’m beyond grateful to be able to wield them and take them to new heights, and inspire others along the way. It excites me to see other people happy from the hard work I put in, and to have the chance in helping them find their feet, and develop themselves into becoming the best they can be, too! With all that said, I’m excited to announce that I have completed some wonderful projects (and some in the works too), which include two big feature films (one you’ll see in theatres, the other on streaming!), some amazing community basketball projects, a virtual world motivational speaking tour, and a health and fitness program coming too.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For me, those skills are:
– [ ] Resilience
– [ ] Will to outwork
– [ ] Patience
My advice for people early in the game is to never let anything or anyone deter you from your dreams. You’ve been put on this earth for a reason, and the odds are what you make it. It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there for sure, but as long as you give your craft all you got, make lasting connections with the right people who will guide you and support you on your journey, and stay in tune with your inner self, you’ll be perfectly fine!

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I think it’s very important to give 150% in the skills you’re best at, and the ones you’re most passionate about. Me for example, I gave my whole existence into Basketball, and with the platform I was able to build from that, it helped me pivot and transition over to my other talents – like acting! Now I’m able to take some of those principles I learned in sport and in self-discipline over to my other careers, and be the best that I can be. Being multifaceted and avoiding one-dimensionality is the best way to successful outcomes and longevity. If one thing falls short, you can use your versatility to crossover to the next thing you’re good at to stay afloat. With that being said, you can also stay relevant in the fields you’ve chosen, and continue to strive for greatness!
