We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cory Tamura a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cory, so excited to have you with us today and we are really interested in hearing your thoughts about how folks can develop their empathy? In our experience, most folks want to be empathic towards others, but in a world where we are often only surrounded by people who are very similar to us, it can sometimes be a challenge to develop empathy for others who might not be as similar to us. Any thoughts or advice?
The more I go through in life, the more my empathetic nature increases, exponentially.
Conditions of grave physical injury, betrayal, divorce, death etc.. Life really! Often people have a choice of becoming embittered or using life’s pain as a catalyst to personal growth. The kindest people I know and admire the most, are often times the people who have been through the worst.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I make dresses out of rare vintage fabrics. My dress brand is called Braetanette.
It started in a very rudimentary fashion years ago but the ethos behind the dresses remains the same. Stylish, chic modern pieces made with fabrics of history & substance.
My goal is to make women feel sexy and beautiful in my dresses. And the uniqueness of every piece is integral to this mission!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I’d have to say embracing failure as a part of the journey. Understanding and adapting to each country’s way of doing business. Letting go of the idea of doing everything on your own.
I think doing your best to keep an open mind when approaching all things related to your business is key.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I think it’s better to go all in on your strengths and seek out others to collaborate with whose strengths lie elsewhere.
Your own personal vision and authenticity is ultimately what you are seeking to get out into the world. Without that, there really isn’t a foundation.
The times that I’ve immersed myself in other fashion influences has quelled my own creativity. I actually do much better creatively when I’m sequestered from other influences.
