We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Courtney Battista. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Courtney below.
Hi Courtney, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
I very much believe in the creative process, setting an intention, revisiting it, adjust if needed and continuing to roll forward.
My name is Courtney Battista. I am a mother of three (three children in two years-twins!), business owner, psychotherapist, adjunct professor, yoga instructor, and now author. As I write that, it seems like a lot. But really, these are things that I have been working towards since I was 18 years old and began my educational journey towards a degree in Psychology. I graduated from Wake Forest University with a BA in Psychology then Columbia University with a MA and EdM in Psychological Counseling.
The only way I have accomplished so much is by taking small steps often.
To speak to my self care, I believe so much in good sleep, exercise 4 times a week, eating healthy, and spiritual health. My husband is also including in my self care as we navigate raising three children and supporting each other.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I created Mindful Life Therapy LLC back in 2012 and it has organically grown to a well respected team of 5 based in Somerville, NJ. Throughout my journey as a psychotherapist, I have been drawn to the supervision process. Supporting and educating individuals both in the classroom as well as on their way to full licensure.
In 2020, I started writing Reflections: An Interactive Guide to Clinical Supervision. Four years of efforts has come to a publication!
With over a decade of experience as a clinical supervisor, I’ve seen firsthand the need for more structured and effective supervision resources. Too often, supervision is rushed and unfocused, requiring more directive and grounding resources.
Reflections: An Interactive Guide for Clinical Supervision is designed to provide clinicians and supervisors with practical tools and insights to improve the supervision process. This guide addresses common challenges in clinical supervision and offers solutions to make supervision more directive, focused, and meaningful.
It moves beyond case conceptualization, leaning into topics such as:
Learning techniques to receive and provide effective feedback.
Understanding and applying ethical practices in supervision.
Developing multicultural humility and enhancing self-care.
Setting boundaries and preventing burnout in clinical settings.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Organization – Once I was handed the school agenda book in middle school there was not turning back for me. I love to write things down and highlight them when completed. I set goals and track progress.
Trusting the process – Everything is a process and from the outside we may look in on others and feel like wow they landed in such a great space.. but everything is a building block on another. Taking the class, having the conversation, writing the blog, signing up for the seminar, etc. If we have a goal and set the idea in motion, we will move closer to this space
Finding good mentors – I have a few women who have shaped my professional and spiritual life. This has made a huge difference in seeing myself in evolved spaces.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
My goal in the creation of Reflections: An Interactive Guide to Clinical Supervision was to provide this resource to others to help educate and support. There are a few organizations locally in NJ that have expressed interest in a course to go along with the text.
I am looking to collaborate with other supervisors and counselor educators who may be interested in using Reflections (and eventually the online course).
