We were lucky to catch up with Courtney Bell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Courtney, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
My optimism comes from extreme loss, heartache, and a long period of depression, which is a form of PSTD. After a hospitalization right before my 32 birthday and then going to both group and individual therapy sessions, I have gained skills have allowed me to transform my outlook to overall optimistic. Life is fleeting, and no one is promised tomorrow; I live my life to the fullest and I love hard. Optimism is contagious and I love uplifting others.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am not only a photographer, but also a storyteller. I live and breathe community, art, music, and live performances. I have worked with various clients and organizations, such as local businesses, nonprofits, and festivals, to showcase their stories and products through my images. I consider myself an artist and storyteller.
I love supporting my local communities and using my skills to document and promote the work of local artists, musicians, and performers. I truly believe that art and photography can bring people together and inspire positive change in the world.
I love documenting life and always bring my camera with me to capture the moments that matter (big and small). My other artistic endeavors include mixed media art, textile art, and jewelry making.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resilience to never give up in your art or what you believe in. Being open-minding and always learning a new method or skill. Networking with other artists and likeminded people.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
My number one obstacle and challenge is self-confidence and confidence in my work/art. My anxiety lets me live with the constant feeling of imposter-syndrome. I get through this feeling through journaling, meditating, and other self-care activities.
