We recently connected with Courtney Bourasaw and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I think it’s part of my personality to fight in the face of adversity. But I know that I find my strength in the Lord.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I created TST shortly after our oldest daughter passed away from brain cancer. Her diagnosis was terminal and we were just surviving day to day. The pure exhaustion of having 4 kids, one who’s life will knowingly be cut short and constant traveling wore on us. More times than not, we just needed a clean meal. Something that wouldn’t make us feel like crap. And that was so hard to come by. Fueled by grief and necessity, I came up with the idea to have easy, ready to eat, meals that supported our local farmers, people who didn’t know how to cook (or didn’t want to) and people who were going through a hard time in life and just needed a break that involved no dishes.
Our business has evolved a lot in the 18 months our doors have been open but it has improved positively with each inch of growth. We are still operating Monday – Friday but our selection is huge and we have so many cool products to fielder people from dinners to salads to desserts to snacks to pantry staples. We have so many great products. All scratch made. All focusing on clean and simple ingredients while avoid gluten, refined sugar, soy and seed oils.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think coming from nothing, becoming a drug addict, going in and out of jail and getting clean at 21 showed my resilience. I has also been very determined and always find a way to do something. And then trusting that God would provide. So resilience, determination and trust.
Find what matters the most to you and make those things your reasons why. Don’t change them for anyone else but be open to change in perspective. Listen to others but be firm in yourself. Don’t give up and be honest and open about your struggles.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My husband. And maybe that seems cliché but he truly is a gem. Not only does he listen to my woes of owning a small business but he encourages the positives and believes in me. He offers unbiased advice when it’s needed and a silent ear when that is needed. He will drop everything to make my success possible. He’s hands on with our kids and a true partner in parenting which allows me time to dedicate to growing TST.
