We recently connected with Courtney Broska and have shared our conversation below.
Courtney, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Both personally and professionally, I found my purpose by choosing what brings me the most joy and what drives me as a person. For me, as a photographer, this means I find myself at my happiest when I am photographing others’ journeys and stories, capturing their moments at any stage of their lives. I have always had an immense interest in capturing “the now” in my own life, that it feels beyond rewarding to be the memory keeper, if you will, for my clients and their loved ones — I truly believe that everything, no matter big or small, deserves to be documented. I thrive in different environments and situations while creating, digging deep into my natural artistic nature.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am the owner of Courtney Broska Photography, a lifestyle portrait and wedding photography business based in Buffalo, New York. Although I photograph my clients’ stories locally, I travel frequently both across America, and internationally, as well. Whether that be for portraits, styled photo sessions, or your special day – I love to travel and capture new faces in new places!
My work can be described as nostalgic, candid, and “an unforgettable experience” as I always put my clients, and their stories, above all else. I believe that as a photographer, my number one priority is capturing this season of life for my clients accurately and with true emotion, rather than photographing images that would look best for a social media feed.
One of my most recent accomplishments, other than bringing on more amazing clients, is that both my work and my business name are featured on a billboard in my local city. This is something I wouldn’t have ever expected, but have certainly dreamed of since the start of my journey. For me, this billboard is more of a physical symbol that hard work is worth every last effort, and that you should never stop following your strongest passion(s).

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
If I had to reflect on life before photography, and the beginning stages of my journey, lots of ideas flood into my head. I would say the most impactful areas of knowledge stem from my high school’s leadership program. This program taught me many skills that I have taken into my business and personal life, that general education didn’t touch base on, such as time and project management, delegation, how to play a leading role efficiently in different situations, and how to expand my mind creatively.
As a portrait and wedding photographer, the qualities of assertiveness and creativity play a crucial role in both business management and client experience. The client wants someone who is confident and knowledgeable, but someone who can also set themselves apart both with the experience given and their personality.
Courtney Broska Photography was built while I was completing this leadership program, and while I was still in high school. Being able to develop my craft as a business owner and as an artist during a time where I was learning quality life skills is something I will forever appreciate, and an experience that I will continue to grow from as my business blooms.
A piece of advice I have for those who are wanting to start their business, whether that be in photography or other, is always be yourself and know that you are always going to be learning. There are always skills and other techniques that you will learn along the way, and I am still even attaining new pieces of knowledge. Whether this be through furthered education, coworking with people in the industry, or personal research, there will forever be something to learn.

How would you describe your ideal client?
If I really had to dig deep, I would say that my ideal client is anyone that values the importance of connection. Connection is what runs my business and makes it as successful as it has become, whether that is through vendor friendships, client relationships, or the connectedness between myself and my business.
When receiving a new client, I am not only being chosen as their photographer. I am there to help them every step of the way to ensure comfortability, confidence, and a sense of ease all during the process and afterward. Photography and booking a photo session, or photo coverage, can be difficult for those who have never had photos taken before, or those who feel uncomfortable in front of the camera; This is why connection is so huge to me. Without connection, relationships fail to succeed and grow. With connection, relationships have the proper nutrients to blossom and grow into something beautiful whether that be in new opportunities to work with one another, the client referring you to friends and family, or other positives.
I sincerely love the art behind photography, and believe the art itself is rooted in romanticizing the moments that matter most. The first thing we do when we have a strong interest towards something or someone is to take a photograph, and it is a moment frozen in time forever. As a client, you want to choose a photographer who values this, and your special moments that you would like captured. I want to be able to freeze that moment for you for eternity, while capturing your life’s littlest and greatest moments. I want you to choose a photographer who you trust wholeheartedly, both in the experience they will provide for you and creatively. This art form is so vast in that there are no rules, so please choose someone who aligns with your values entirely — and I hope I can be that photographer for you.
