We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Courtney Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I get my work ethic from growing up in the South. Growing up in Alabama, I’ve always worked in fields, helping my grandfather and assisting my dad around the house. I watched him work hard to provide for his family, and my mom’s entrepreneurial spirit always inspired me as she tried to make ends meet. This strong work ethic has been ingrained in me for as long as I can remember.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I started Life View Video Production, LLC in 2016. My motivation for starting Life View was that in 2010, I had started a business that eventually failed. I believed that the failure was due to my inability to have adequate visibility. So when I started Life View, I was driven to provide an engine for small businesses to jumpstart their business with visual media.
Our “why” is: Life View Video Production exists to give everyone an equal opportunity to grow their business and organization through visual content. Ensuring people’s success is a top priority for us.
One of our specialties is telling people’s stories. We call these types of videos “Bio Videos”. These videos give companies or organizations an opportunity to introduce themselves to their respective audiences.
What we would like people to know about us is that video is our art. We take every project personally, and our success is tied to our clients’ success. We love challenges and have a great team of creators who thrive on being challenged and stepping out of their comfort zone.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on my journey, one thing that I reflect upon is the fact that I am just one person. My greatest asset is the individuals I surround myself with who help me grow and improve. Even as a CEO, it is crucial for me to maintain humility and remain open to learning. I acknowledge that there are areas where I excel and areas where I am weak. For the areas in which I am weak, I seek out leaders who are stronger in those aspects. It is important to understand that success is not solely about one’s ability to do something, but rather about their ability to get it done.
My advice to anyone embarking on a similar journey is to always remain teachable and humble.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I’m a US Army veteran who suffers from anxiety and other mental health issues. Over time, I’ve discovered that taking a pause, stepping back, and assessing the situation before responding has helped to minimize my anxiety. As a person of faith, I find solace in the words of the Bible that say, “Which of you by worrying can add a cubit to his stature?” So, when faced with intense obstacles during projects, I’ve learned that overthinking and putting myself in a state of anxiety only exacerbates the situation. It’s important to remember that worrying excessively does not improve anything; it only makes things worse.
