We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Courtney Dorsey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
My entire life I have been an athlete, from a young competitive gymnast, college track & field athlete to now in my adult years competing in body building in the NPC. I have always focused on being the best version of myself, in whatever chapter of life I am in. Everything in my life, the good and the bad, led me to where I am today in creating a safe, motivational and inspiring community for my clients at my private training facility, Premier Athletics and Fitness. Having the life experiences I have had, I knew I had to create a space for individuals, especially women, to feel not only safe, but a big sense of community. We thrive when we have a supportive community, so that is what I did, and continue to strive to do. My purpose, is to help people be the best version of themselves and that starts with feeling good in your body. Building a body that not only you’re proud of, but that makes you feel great. In a way my purpose found me, once I became a Certified Personal Trainer, I knew it was my calling because it never felt like work, it brought me true joy. After working at a handful of gyms over the years, I knew I needed to open my own space, where I could not only teach people about balance and healthy living, but create the community you need for the foundation of living an active and healthy lifestyle.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Courtney, I am dedicated mom of three, former Division One Track and Field athlete, NPC competitor and experienced fitness professional, I bring a unique blend of personal and professional expertise to my role as a gym owner and head trainer. With years of experience and certification as a National Academy of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer, I specialize in guiding both women and men toward achieving their fitness goals. My mission is to help clients build strength, embrace a healthy lifestyle, and attain the bodies of their dreams, all while fostering a supportive and motivating environment.
My gym Premier Athletics offers 1:1 personal training, online training, youth training as well as personal training in a group setting. I welcome all levels of athletes. I have always strived to not only tell my clients how to train, but teach them. I want my clients to learn from me as their mentor. I am my clients biggest cheerleader, I will teach you all you need to know when it comes to creating a lifestyle that allows you to not restrict and train for hours, but find balance, all while building a body you love and are proud of. At Premier I am focused on giving each individual client the support they need to accomplish all of their goals!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The first quality that I think has been impactful in my journey as a personal trainer is having been a competitive athlete from a young age. Not everyone has the privilege to compete at the level that I did in my youth and college years. I was able to learn from some amazing mentors in my journey. Coaches and teammates as well who had huge impacts on my life, this translates in to the trainer and mentor I am today. I strive to give my community love, support and the knowledge they need to get to their goals.
Stacking habits. I learned what this meant years ago. I pass this skill along to all my clients. Adding habits slowly to your day to day life so that eventually these habits become your lifestyle. Small attainable goals each day stacked is how we create the habits we need to get to our goals. This translates not only in the gym and with a healthy lifestyle, but anywhere else in life! Stacking healthy habits creates a lifestyle.
I can relate. When it comes to diets and exercise I can relate to all of my clients in some way. Ive tried every form of exercise to change my body, done all the fad diets over the years and in that I know how to support my clients because I have been there! I know what the science behind gaining muscle and losing body fat is, I know the steps we have to take to actually change out body composition and have it last. I know that quick fixes are just that, quick, and usually not sustainable. I relate because I know how it feels to want to change your body, but you keep falling into the yo-yo cycle. I use this knowledge to really communicate with my clients the importance of creating not only healthy habits, but habits that are non-restrictive and can be maintained!

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who feels stuck. Someone who feels like they have tried everything and keep failing. Why? Because I have been there! My ideal client just needs someone to teach them and someone who will believe in them! My ideal client is someone who is ready for change! It is so easy to fall for the gimmicks that we see nowadays, diet culture has taken over so helping clients realize slow and steady how we make body composition changes is really what it is all about.
