We recently connected with Courtney Gosser and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
Self-care is something I struggled with for a long time, especially when I made the choice to become a freelance graphic designer and illustrator. In my position, I find it both lucky and challenging to have the freedom and flexibility as a one-person operation.
I have the flexibility to take on projects that spark interest, I can set a schedule that allows me to spend more time with my husband, and I can take risks that stem from my own mind and desires for my business. Additionally, I also at times feel the pressure of being the only one to answer emails, update my website, handle social media, and all of the other tasks that help to keep my business running that aren’t in my typical creative realm. With this balance, I’ve found that prioritizing self-care helps keep me relaxed and energized, and also in a headspace fueled by optimism and excitement to keep moving forward.
My primary form of self-care is taking time to step away from my work persona, and disconnecting from social media and an online presence due to my computer and phone playing such large roles in my work life. While I step away, I actively choose to connect with an activity that’s only purpose is to spark joy – I play board games with my husband, I allow myself to take a long afternoon nap, I pick up a book and light a candle, etc.
But more importantly than slowing down and disconnecting, I also practice talking to myself with love and sensitivity. I remind myself that I am allowed to relax, that I deserve to feel rested, and that self-care is just as productive as ticking off that next task on my to-do list. I think pairing an intentional action with messages of comfort are what truly help me to invest time and energy into my self-care in a way that leaves me feeling calm and ready to tackle whatever comes next!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am an Indianapolis-based graphic designer and illustrator, specializing in branding services, custom illustration commissions, and an online storefront that offers apparel, accessories, and digital resources. All of my work is heavily influenced by color, nature, and positive thinking, and I really aim to create designs and products that can help add a little more happiness to the world.
My clients are often seeking an artist to provide natural and organic design elements in terms of coloring, font selection, and illustrations and I love working with them on creating a visual identity or products that help amplify the personality behind the brand. I rely on open communication and developing a relationship that feels more like a friendship than a coworking vibe, which ultimately helps to keep the process fun, engaging, and highly collaborative.
When it comes to my online store, I like to offer a selection of apparel and accessories that make you feel confident and care-free. Each item often uses a positive quote or optimstics illustrations, and my digital resources are meant to give you a little boost of self-confidence, whether it be in your own creative journey through helpful design resources or in your daily life through free downloadable content.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Thinking about what has helped me most in my own journey and growth, I would have to say determination to keep showing up, actively seek out opportunities even if they scare you, and always be thankful for the projects and people that help your growth.
Showing up in a new space can be intimidating, and when we face challenges or setbacks it may be easier to take time off or step down from what is before you. In my own experience, it often ends up being the most challenging lessons that help to push me further due to the lessons I learn or the desire to do better the next time around.
Additionally, the ebb and flow of opportunities can often be a roller coaster. Some months are amazing and filled with exciting projects and clients, whereas some months can feel lonely or slow. While I LOVE (and I mean love) being able to connect with clients or collaborators through social media or their own discoveries of my work, I’ve also found that actively seeking out an opportunity can open some amazing doors and help to build self-confidence.
And finally, expressing gratitude not only lifts your own spirits but helps to ensure the community that surrounds you also gets to celebrate in the excitement of growth and success. Journeys are very seldom done fully on our own, and sharing the kindness and gratitude to those who have supported you is an easy way of ensuring you continue to foster wonderful connections.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
I would say my current number one challenge is stimulating additional growth outside of my typical niche and client set. I have been so fortunate to partner with amazing clients on a multitude of projects, most of which come from my use of social media to promote and advertise my work. But now that I feel comfortable in my space, I know it is time to grow and develop additional skills to ensure I continue to grow as a creative but also as a business owner.
My home is within the creative – I love content, illustrations, exploring visuals, and anything else that stems from aesthetics and artwork. Where I am not so strong is the true business side of operations like new outreach initiatives or optimizing my workflow for better results.
I am a big believer that if you run into an obstacle that isn’t within your skillset – ask for help from those who can teach and guide you. This is why I am excited to explore more educational resources and business coaching that help to build up the skills that don’t come as naturally to me. While I can try to navigate challenges on my own and hopefully succeed, I know that the world is filled with individuals who have the knowledge and ability to help lead me to new processes and solutions, and I want to make sure I give myself the best chance at growth by trusting in the success of a community!
