We were lucky to catch up with Coyal Harrison III recently and have shared our conversation below.
Coyal, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I found my purpose in helping business owners when I was working part-time with Lyft and Postmates. My family and I would actually do Postmates together. We would pick up food from eccentric small businesses and local hidden gems that we had never seen before in my 18 years living in Las Vegas. It was funny to have moments of smelling the food but not being able to see what we were delivering to the customers. So, we started to write down the establishments we would like to go back to visit. Before the pandemic, my family and I started a local guide account on Google Maps and started visiting our local food establishments that we were currently eating at to produce a review for them on their Google account. As we started visiting establishments, the owners would recognize what we were doing and start to interact with us with stories of how they started and future dishes. That started in 2021 and on this day, we have over 17 million views from our reviews on Google Maps.
In January 2021, I was laid off from my job due to the pandemic and applied for unemployment while writing out a plan to turn my reviews into a company or a show. The stories I was told from all the business owners needed to be presented on a wider platform and that fulfilled my purpose of inventing the podcast Visit Vegas Places.
So, my situation was similar to all these small business owners trying to survive with circumstances drastically changing in the economy. My purpose is to ensure that I provide a platform to any small business who needs promotional reach to gain clients.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a father, writer, and artist. I created Visit Vegas Places with Coyal, a platform and podcast that focuses on local small business owners and entrepreneurs. Our goal is to provide them with a 360 promotional experience. This includes creating content for their establishment or talents, conducting a 30-minute interview that is streamed on all podcast platforms, and promoting the content on all social media platforms. The most rewarding thing about the podcast is when a business owner contacts me months after being aired to share how they gained clients from viewing a reel on social media or hearing the podcast. The interview and content creation are free of charge for the business owner, so Visit Vegas Places welcomes sponsors and donations.
We air a new business owner every Friday and also have a segment called Vegas Ventures Off, where I have interviewed owners in 14 states and 5 countries. I have also partnered with Amazon to create a storefront with curated items for creators to shop the same items I use to create content and produce the podcast show. I am also an affiliate with travel brands to promote travel deals to Vegas with VVP travel & deals on Facebook and Twitter.
In the future, I would like to host events or 1:1 sessions with business owners on how to successfully set up social media accounts on all platforms, how to create engaging content, and best practices for interacting with each platform.
You can tune in to Visit Vegas Places on any podcast platform or visit the website visitvegasplaces.com to learn about the next business owner you can visit in Las Vegas.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Discipline, patience and consistency were the qualities that I had to mature in for a positive impact in my journey. Discipline, patience, and consistency are three essential qualities for achieving success in any area of life. All three qualities are interconnected. Discipline helps us to stay patient and consistent, while patience and consistency help us to maintain discipline. When we have these qualities, we are more likely to achieve our goals, no matter how challenging they may seem. Discipline was needed for the ability to control my thoughts, feelings, and actions in order to achieve a goal and accomplish daily action items.
Patience was embraced for the ability to wait for something without getting upset or discouraged. I had to accept that things take time and that there will be setbacks along the way.
Consistency developed from the act of doing something regularly and repeatedly. I made it a priority to stay on track of my goals, even when I didn’t feel like it.
Some of my tips for developing discipline, patience, and consistency is to set realistic goals. When you set goals that are too difficult or unrealistic, you are more likely to give up. Start with small, achievable goals and gradually work your way up to larger goals. Break down large goals into smaller steps. This will make them seem less daunting and more manageable. Reward yourself for your accomplishments. This will help you to stay motivated and on track. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you are struggling to stay disciplined, patient, or consistent, talk to a friend, family member, or community group.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
From starting the podcast Visit Vegas Places in 2021 until now, there have been plenty of moments of being overwhelmed. I even had a moment where I was thinking about quitting and doubting if I can continue to create content for my audience on a high-level pace. Here are 3 best practices I utilize when feeling overwhelmed. 1. Take a break. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s important to take a step back and take a break. This could mean taking a few minutes to breathe deeply, going for a walk, or doing something else that you enjoy.
2. Identify the root cause of your feeling. Once you’ve had a chance to calm down, try to identify the root cause of your overwhelm. Once you know what’s causing you to feel this way, you can start to develop a plan to deal with it.
3. Set realistic expectations and take care of yourself. Make sure to take care of yourself physically and mentally when you’re feeling overwhelmed. This means getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and exercising regularly. It also means taking some time for yourself to relax and de-stress.
