We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cozi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cozi below.
Hi Cozi, thank you so much for agreeing to open up about a sensitive and personal topic like being fired or laid-off. Unfortunately, there has been a rise in layoffs recently and so your insight and experience with overcoming being let go is relevant to so many in the community.
I’m actually in the midst of overcoming this now. I’m glad I got fired, I wanted that chapter of my life to end and those 3 years felt like forever! I felt so restricted there and I just didn’t like it. Fashion never stopped though, so that’s what I’m very grateful for. God has kept me through all of this, all in his Devine timing. Ecclesiastes 3:1 “There is a season (a time appointed) for everything and a time for every delight and event or purpose under heaven-“
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Cozi and I am a Fashion Stylist from Pontiac, MI. I’ve been a stylist for 2 years now. I already am very passionate about fashion, but I didn’t know what I was doing at all at the time.I started out connecting with models and photographers when I would go to different events in Detroit (mostly parties and art shows) to put myself in the correct environment with the kind of people I want to work with. Through my experience, I’ve had the opportunity to work behind the scenes in a few fashion shows in the city and I just got back from New York Fashion Week a few days ago. I love to be experimental and show my clients a different perspective on their personal style. The most exciting and special thing about fashion is meeting new designers to work with and WEARING art. What’s more exciting than that?
I style for any occasion. Fashion shows, events, brand development, wardrobe revamps . If interested email me 2cozifits@gmail.com!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My advice would be keep record of ALL of your work even if you think it doesn’t matter. It does!! Be professional!!! This is a career and a (very fun) job always but always focus on getting stuff behind the scenes done first so things in the forefront can run smoothly. Be ahead of the curve and responsible, people notice that and people care about that along with the final product. Lastly, don’t put yourself in a box. You never know what opportunities can come your way, it doesn’t matter what you have or don’t have at the time. If you receive it then it was meant for you. My advice to achieve all of these things is be intentional and strategic about how you move within this industry, keep God (or your faith) in the root of everything you’re doing and be your biggest fan.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
They never tried to force me into something I didn’t want to do. They always let me make my own decisions even if they know I’m not making the “right” one. It helped me a lot to grow up and be a problem solver. In adulthood, that is so important and has allowed me to step into my independence while still having their help, support and guidance.
