We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Crystal Boyd. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Crystal below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Crystal with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic from my parents. For as long as I can remember my parents have worked. Both of my parents worked at the same location. My mother retired after over 40+ years and my father is currently still working with over 40+ years. Seeing that my parents stayed on the same job for that long definitely let me know what I need to do. My parents always told me never to leave a job until you have another one lined up. That advice that my parents gave me I live by it.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My full-time job is being a Licensed Vocational Nurse. I recently stopped teaching High School to go back in to nursing. The most exciting part about being a nurse is helping others. Also, with baking I am helping others so both of my careers align with what I love to do. I do baking as I get orders and sometimes do sales when time allows. The most exciting part of my baking career is creating new items or new flavors. I am working on adding sushi cheesecake roll, cheesecake ice cream and cheesecake sandwich bars this summer.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Some areas of knowledge that is important for baking along with other businesses is: organization, learning and accepting failures. The best advice I have for someone who is starting early is to learn from others. There is always someone out there doing something just like you. Take the time to learn from them and also do your research. Also, with all businesses comes some type of failure. What you do after the failure matters the most.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed I take a step back and look at the situation. I will one or more of these things pray, watch television, call my friends, sit outside or take a nap. My advice is when you feel yourself becoming overwhelmed is to take a break from what you are doing. Whether you take a few minutes, hours or days break just make sure you take a break. Our mental health is very important and if we don’t rest or take a break it can have bad effects.
