Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Crystal Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Crystal, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
For the longest time I thought of myself as just a mom. I can remember standing in a room of creative, successful people and shrinking when someone asked what I did for a job and saying…I’m just a mom. I later realized that I needed to be there for my children during those early years. When my daughter turned 4, she had open heart surgery and began a journey of having multiple doctor appointments. I knew my purpose during this season was to care for my family and try to support each of them. I know it’s not the most glamorous job. but I’m thankful I was able to care for my family while my kids were young. Now that they are in middle school and high school, I’m able to use what I’ve learned during these last 15 years to help and encourage other moms, and I’ve even recently started my own business. I think so many moms lose themselves and their purpose during those early years and it’s important to remember that it’s just a season, and to still make time for yourself because one day you will be yourself again.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I hope to encourage moms with simple recipes and daily life. No one has it all together and I think we often get lost looking at perfect lives in squares on social media. My hope is to share our daily chaos of challenges and messy kitchens to show others that no one has it all together.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think the biggest thing is just being authentic. So often people try to put on a front or think they have to have it all together when most people just want to relate to the real you. Alot of my journey has also been in giving back with fostering. I have been able to connect with so many others to get involved in foster care and make a difference in their community. I also say you don’t have to jump full in like we did, but just buying diapers or taking a meal to someone is huge.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
I grew up with very supportive parents. My dad always told me I could do anything I wanted to. They helped support me in high school when I decided I wanted to cheer in college by helping me get additional coaching and lessons. I later went on to cheer at the University of Tennessee on a cheerleading scholarship. At the time that was my dream and I couldn’t of done it without their support.
