Meet Crystal Granger

We were lucky to catch up with Crystal Granger recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Crystal, thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?
My effective communication skills stem from my attentive and intentional listening. Understanding others’ needs and concerns is a priority for me. I always prepare before speaking, whether it’s for a phone call, an event or a meeting. Before I communicate, I reflect on how I can assist, motivate, uplift, and push the listener, client, team member, or colleague.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I juggle multiple roles, and most fit well, although some are more challenging. I am the owner of FunkyTown Social Co., a full service floral and wedding/event planning company serving DFW and destination locations.

In 2017, I launched the company with my silent partner Antonio Granger, initially named FunkyTown Affairs, focusing solely on planning. During the early stages, I ran the business almost single-handedly and soon realized I was heading towards burnout. Seeking guidance from a mentor and connecting with like-minded professionals, I understood that expanding my team was crucial for the company’s growth and my well-being.

Despite uncertainties about the process, affordability, and finding the right individuals, I knew it was essential to evolve. Therefore, I took the leap and hired additional planners and assistants. As the team expanded, I delved into floristry, drawing on skills acquired from my grandmother and great aunt’s flower shop. This decision proved successful, and the floral department thrived. I rebranded the company in 2023 to reflect the expansion of services, plus FunkyTown Social Co just had a ring to it!

What I cherish most is not only my love for florals but also my passion for nurturing and developing individuals in the industry. Supporting my team in achieving their aspirations, providing opportunities for women and young adults, and serving clients and vendors bring me immense joy.

Whether you need a planner, a florist, or an officiant, my team is here to assist. If you seek guidance in the event planning/floral industry, feel free to reach out for advice.
Let’s collaborate and create something extraordinary together!

XO,
Crys

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

My success as a business owner stems from my limitless dreaming coupled with a strong work ethic. Despite facing fears, imposter syndrome, and insecurities, I firmly believe that success comes from taking action. Embracing failure as a learning opportunity has made me resilient and more determined. I persist by continuously seeking new approaches, products, connections, and dreams.

While I am known for thinking innovatively and pursuing unconventional ideas, I also understand the importance of letting go of what no longer serves me. Recognizing when to pivot and release things that hinder progress is crucial for growth. I am unafraid of change if it leads to improvement.

Above all, my ability to connect and communicate with others is what I cherish most as a business owner and individual. Traits like kindness, empathy, compassion, and setting boundaries have enhanced my personal and professional life significantly.

For newcomers in my field or anyone striving to achieve their dreams, here’s my advice… To truly progress, surround yourself with individuals who excel beyond you. Embrace learning from them, remain humble and compassionate. Dedicate yourself to hard work while also prioritizing self-care and family time. Stay open to learning and be approachable.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?

I love this question! My response is simple – both! Embrace your strengths wholeheartedly while working on areas that need improvement. I strongly believe that being around colleagues, friends, and employees who possess strengths different from ours aids in personal growth. I encourage my team to shine in their areas of expertise. I provide support where they may need assistance, and they reciprocate the same for me. I am continuously learning from my team as they aim for greatness.
