Meet Crystal Mcmullen

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Crystal Mcmullen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Crystal, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

Getting things done is my superpower! Even in elementary school, I was planning and executing projects like a seasoned adult. Throughout my career, no matter what role I’ve had, I’m the one who keeps things moving. So, when I became a project manager, I thought, “No problem, I’ve got this.” But then the imposter syndrome hit. I started doubting myself and feeling like I wasn’t good enough. I felt like everyone was watching me, waiting for me to fail. I’d get so nervous during meetings that I’d start sweating. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve left a meeting sporting huge sweat stains!

But then I realized that people are usually too busy worrying about themselves to be judging you. I remind myself of all the times I’ve planned and executed things successfully. I know I’m good at what I do and I don’t let anyone (not even my inner critic) tell me otherwise.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I’ve learned that three things are key in project management: clarity, flexibility, and a relentless pursuit of improvement. When you have a clear goal, it’s like having a compass – it keeps you on track. When challenges arrive (and they will), just remember why you started. As with any journey, there will be ups and downs. Don’t be afraid to change course if you need to. That’s the beauty of project management – it’s all about adapting to deliver successfully. You’re your own biggest project. A growth mindset is critical for your long-term success. Keep learning, keep growing, and always be open to feedback.

For those just starting out, I recommend getting really clear on your ‘why’. We call this creating a project charter in project management. What do you want to achieve? What are your limits? What will you have accomplished when you reach your goal? By clarifying your goals, you’re laying the foundation for a successful project – YOU.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

I consider myself a complex project, and like most projects, there can be some overwhelming times. When I’m feeling that way, I apply the same project management skills I use for my projects.

First, I identify the root cause. What’s really stressing me out? Is it a specific task, a deadline, or something bigger?

Then, I break it down into vertical slices of value. This means dividing the task into smaller, more manageable pieces, focusing on the most valuable parts first. It’s like eating an elephant one bite at a time.

And finally, I take a deep breath. I meditate and journal for an hour at the beginning of each workday. It helps me stay grounded and focused.

It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. We’re all human. Just take a step back, evaluate the situation, and apply those project management skills. You got this!
