We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Crystal Perez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Crystal below.
Hi Crystal , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
My purpose is many things all at once… to be a good mother, daughter and sister as well as a good hairstylist and friend to my clients.
I don’t know that I necessarily found my purpose to be a hair stylist as much as it found me. I have always had a passion for anything that allows me to be creative and have always found myself doing my hair in many different styles and colors. I love to experiment. For as long as I can remember I wanted to go to school and learn everything and never stop learning about hair so I did it! It’s not work to me, it’s a passion I enjoy every day.
To help people see the beauty I see, to help someone feel more confident in themselves, to set the example for my kids – that I have done everything that I have set my mind to so far (and they can do the same) is even more motivating and confirms I am doing what I was put here to do.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I do a lot of Brazilian Blowouts and color (fun color especially) but I also enjoy the many perms and extensions I get to do for my clients.
I get to work side by side with my oldest daughter Samara. We have a great partnership that compliments each other very well. It’s an honor to be able to see her grow each and every day.
My daughter and I currently donate some time to Kirby Seinor Center by giving the seniors haircuts. I really enjoy giving back to the community and look forward to doing more. I am currently trying to piece together events for children that would benefit from a free haircut.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities that were most impactful in my journey and continue to be impactful is being able to communicate with your client. Making sure you understand what they are wanting and educating them on how to get to that goal.
Second would be continued education. Never stop learning. There are always new trends and new products coming out and we as stylists must keep up with it all.
Last is being able to take an experience where maybe the client was not happy and learn from that experience. Don’t get discouraged, make everything a learning experience.
How would you describe your ideal client?
I am lucky to have my ideal client almost daily. A client that loves my work and show it by promoting me. It is such a privilege when someone not only trusts me with their hair but they love my work and share those thoughts and feelings with others.
In my profession, the best way to gain more clients is word of mouth. Whether that be a Google review, a review on social media, or on my business page…it’s the best compliment a stylist can get and I appreciate every single person who has already done so. It means the world to me!
