We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Crystal Phillips. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Crystal below.
Hi Crystal, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
I had two very distinct personalities as parents. My dad is very analytical, very realistic, whereas my mom has always let me dream. She’s Catholic and raised me to be faithful, hopeful and joyful. She’s a bit of a silly bean. It was a good balance of personalities growing up. But I think as I got older I found life was just better, more fun when you stay in a hopeful, positive state of mind. Life seems to just be better overall.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’ve been creating since I was tiny. It’s my air. I’ve noticed even my physical health will start to decline if I don’t give myself time and an outlet to express my creative ideas and daily life density that can build up. My most recent endeavor is Foodie Friends. A set of stories and characters I came up with. The stories teach children about kindness, helping each other out and non-judgment. I’ve also designed and created and sell plushies to go with the books and they’re for sale on my website foodiefriends.com I write the stories with things I’ve taught my own children, to be helpful, mindful of yourself and others.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
For sure being brave enough to believe in yourself and your dream. Not many people have the courage to go all in with a dream they’ve had. The other aspect is funding and asking for help. Some people can use their own capital, some have to go out and get funding. Again, it takes courage to reach out and ask for a huge amount of money that can help launch that dream. And tenacity. To hold on to something, to keep going, even when things get scary or looks like you may fail. To believe in something with all your might and keep going in the face of adversity, I think that’s a big part of moving forward and succeeding.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I believe it’s essential to recognize your weaknesses and seek help from those whose strengths complement them. For example, I’m not great with organization or managing the financial side of running a business, so I’ve built a team to fill those gaps. One is a numbers expert, and the other keeps me on track by staying focused and helping me prioritize what needs to be done.
