We recently connected with C!ty Matthews and have shared our conversation below.
C!ty, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I would say from being told no so many times and people always judging my appearance. I have a baby face to be my age and I have a very laid back personality. Pursuing music I always wanted my music to stand out from the others which meant it wouldn’t be accepted from the local hometown crowd because majority of the artists there make the same kind of music. I had to train myself to have high confidence and high self esteem as a defensive mechanism.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Hello I am c!ty matthews and I am an independent music artist from Milwaukee WI. I reside in NY and spent a decade in memphis TN. I make music and produce content on Instagram and my YouTube and share my music on Spotify, apple, soundcloud and YouTube. The most exciting part about this journey is that I am in complete control of everything I release. I play almost every part in my career for example I am the rapper to the songwriter all the way down to hiring PR marketing teams to push my music out to the universe. Started late 2007 as I say shooting in the gym to perfect my craft to becoming a professional when I got my first royalty check from Spotify in 2019. I am mostly focused on creating new content for Instagram and YouTube to bring awareness the only con is that I don’t have a team of people who can bounce ideas to me. I tend to overthink at times and be procrastinating but I’m working on it. I have merch that I design on bonfire and teespring that I wear at my shows I tend to do open mics and independent artist showcases in toronto canada and NYC
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Good question I would say for the skills department
Vision , ambition, and perseverance my areas of knowledge will be organic music marketing alot and not burning yourself out trying to compete with major artists. Alot of folks who make music just focus on the writing the recording budget and the art cover. They don’t really have a budget for marketing because they just think people go check it out just from posting a link on their social media pages. My advice will be just focus on one song at a time and research marketing companies set a realistic budget and you will see how the algorithm responds.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Emotional intelligence and understanding the music business more and more each day.
