We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cwamne Howard. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cwamne below.
Hi Cwamne, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I overcame imposter syndrome by doing multiple things:
1. The biggest has been looking back on my body of work.
2. Reading content from multiple PR pros in my area on Linkedin.
3. Reading the positive reviews I have gotten from past clients and bosses.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a freelance PR specialist and I specialize in media relations. I help businesses and individuals build brand awareness through media coverage (online publications, podcasts, TV, radio and print). I typically work with more smaller businesses, startups and solo entrepreneurs. I absolutely enjoy helping small brands build their awareness from the ground up. I’m the PR guy for the little guys.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Research: Doing research is how I sharpen my skills, understand the media pros I pitch and the direction my PR campaigns need to go. To be research orientated, your mindset needs to be on always wanting confirmation, don’t assume you’re right.
2. Thinking Strategically: With PR, it’s something where you’re competing with many, so half effort won’t cut it. You can’t just write a pitch, blast it out on Muck Rack and expect it to work. You really need to dig into your client, learn their story, learn what they know, find out what they’re working on, look into what’s going on their industry etc. Being very thorough is key. Also, every detail needs to matter to you.
3. Writing: You won’t find a decent PR pros who has writing isn’t important in PR. When you do pitching you need to be concise, to the point and explain why this pitch matters. I suggest reading examples of other people’s pitches. To constantly edit and double catch your work. Eliminating as many words as you can.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My mom always pushed for me to be educated and go to college. That sense of going to college was always there and it is because of my mom.
